In light of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Sg Redditors are wondering if the Taliban could smuggle missles to Malaysia or Indonesia to fire into Singapore.

Did a google on hamas' rocket arsenal and it seems the one that fits the distance the best is the Grad missile so lets go with it:
if they used the Grad missile (range up to 55km), with speed of 75 km per hour 690 meter/ second would take about 14 mins 26 seconds to reach MBS.
we have the SPYDER and the radar that guides iron dome, even its deployed at changi airbase, has a speed of mach 4 or 1.3km per second, it would take the missile just 12 seconds to intercept the Grad missile halfway through the straits of Singapore
edit: my bad looked at the wrong speed LOL now it looks not so good, we need almost simultaneous launch of spyder when the grad launches...

without going into operational specifics, the spyder likely won't be able to neutralise such a threat. Afterall the spyder is very different from the iron dome. As for the MMR... i cant reveal anything... but yeah nah...
but anyway, I wish we had the iron dome

Ahah 75 kmh is the speed of the truck it is launched from in the Wikipedia page!
Listed muzzle velocity is 690 m/s, keeping it as constant value it would mean 25 seconds of flight for 17.5 km

The island is so densely populated that almost anywhere is a significant target.
Artillery-type weapons (bigger than mortars) effects range from a few tens of meters to the size of a football pitch for the big cluster rockets.
Military people will say you need all this targeting equipment, spotters and all that, because they're trained to aim at military targets. But you don't need all that. As a terrorist all you have to is drop it within 1 km of Orchard.

don’t think the rockets are either powerful enough to cause the tower(s) to collapse or accurate enough to actually hit tower. But assuming if it did, I don’t think the casualty rate will be too high. Right away, airspace would likely be closed. Fighter jets would ramp up air patrols. Similarly, waters around Singapore would see increased patrols. Don’t think there will be soldiers on the ground doing high vis deterrence patrols, but definitely a lot more police around. Politically it goes either way - either people rally around the Govt like it did when LKY passed, or they get upset and vote for the opposition.
Diplomatically - don’t think Singapore will pull off a USA/israel move by counter Bombing wherever the attack site in Batam was, but defo heavy pressure on the Indonesian government to arrest and maybe extradite them to Singapore.

I think you underestimate how structurally sound buildings are, and severely overestimate the basic capabilities of an unguided rocket with the ability to carry only a very limited payload. An Anti-Tank Guided Missile stolen from one of our SAF Ammo Depots would have probably made more of an impression into the glass facade of MBS.
Hamas has had decades of experience firing rockets at the rate of thousands per annum. If you look at the news , the average Hamas rocket seems capable of at most punching a decently-sized hole into an Israeli's citizen residential brick house's wall. And that is with the benefit of having the force of gravity from a ballistic trajectory.
I'd be surprised if the rocket even made in halfway past the Singapore strait.

There are many areas in Batam that could see Singapore clearly. In a terrorist attack, nobody would just shoot a single rocket and expect success. They would use guerilla tactics and shoot towards our skyline from multiple beaches, hills that has the Singapore skyline view.
There are many hills and beaches that are unmanned currently and they all do have a wonderful view of Singapore.
Looking at how Hamas attacked Israel, they would also use the same tactics of spamming rockets into our airspace at random timings, which will stress out our radars. As the terrorists cant get ballistic missiles easily, they can only use makeshift rockets which would be smaller in size and also lessen the damage if it hits. My view is that we will have many windows broken and office areas/ hotel rooms damaged or unusable for a period of time. For the rockets, lets just hope it drops into the sea before it reaches our outer islands.
For this kind of attacks to happen, the terrorists must be non Riau origin as almost all of Batam residents want to keep a good relation with Singapore. Most of Batam relies on tourism from Singaporeans and Malaysians. The terrorists will be coming from other parts of Indonesia and due to them being foreign, they will spark suspicion and attract attention from authorities. If an attack happens, it will be doomed for Batam people. The police there are better off in preventing terrorist attacks than petty crime. So the best preventive measure is for our ISD and SID to keep a good relationship with the Riau Archipelago police, military and intelligences so that they stop anyone with any bad intentions to harm the reputation of the islands and Singapore.

They will be sanctioned by many nations. It will be hard for them to smuggle illegal weapons to Indonesia or Malaysia as they are a landlocked country and everything that goes out by air or land will be monitored with many checks. It wont make sense for them to lose good weapons just because of plans to attack a nation like Singapore who doesn't have any direct military contact with them.
They will use the weapons they have against their own rebels and maybe neighbouring states first before thinking of expanding overseas. And by then, the whole of NATO will be dominating the region again.

Realistically, the probability of such a plot succeeding is so close to zero that it shouldn't even have gotten past the shower thoughts phase.
No fucking way a bunch of pseudo terrorists can acquire the necessary materials, build an unguided rocket-propelled projectile, successfully test it secretly and without malfunction, then secretly and accurately aim and fire it at a critical target 18km or more away. A guided rocket-propelled projectile scenario is even less probable as to be impossible.

If you look at the Gaza rocket attacks the damage is always limited to at most a few deaths if people are unlucky and it hits a bus or something. The warhead yields are nowhere near enough to cause any significant damage to a large building.

I remember after the 9/11 attacks, a small group of people did distance themselves away from the Muslim community. I didn't knew the point of it since I was just a kid then. Like the "Chew on it" comics then.
Thankfully, our Chinese neighbor has a heart of gold.
Still talk to us, we share food (they prefer to eat halal food, don't know why) treat us like we're human when some others distance themselves from us.
Confusingly, our Indian friends who were not Muslim also got the same treatment since they sometimes wear the "kain pelikat/sarong" looks like they were going to doing the Muslim prayer. I find this confusion to be baseless
Took a few years for us to come back to normalcy, still, the memories of those days after 9/11 sometimes linger.
How could some people just lose faith in their Muslim friends so easily. Given if there's a Military emergency I believe the Malay Muslim community will fight for the defence of our land, Singapore.
Hate has no place here.

politically either a rally around the flag effect that allows them to push through our version of the patriot act, and other authoritarian legislation to consolidate control in the name of national security
or a huge hit to government credibility that results in a right wing party being elected to parliament that poses a real electoral challenge to the incumbent.

The rocket likely will land harmlessly into the sea, or land in one of the smaller islets nearby. Physical damge zero to neligible.
The psychological shock though is immense. Expect anti Muslim sentiment to skyrocket and progessive voices to be shut down. Dr M trying his stunts in 2018 finds a far more militant response.
The boat sent to squat outside Tuas? Expect the Coast Guard to not only confront it, but the deployment of speakers playing loud obscene music and the screams of dying animals to mindfuck them.

Launching a rocket towards Singapore alone, even if it ends up landing in water, or blown up by our air defences, is enough to make sensational headlines like "End of an Era: Singapore's defences breached.", "Terror rocket attack reaches shores of wealthy city-state.". That would be enough to spook investors for a short while.

My very short succinct guess: those rockets, assuming they actually hit SG, would kill a few dozen people, knock a few holes in buildings. But life will just carry on as before after a couple of months or so. Take a look at historical experiences from Palestine/Israel, Gulf war, V1/V2 attacks against Britain. It takes A LOT of rockets to do any serious damage against a major city

If they indeed have a rocket launcher, the bigger threat is that they might move closer until it is within an effective range. In such cases, I think we should be patrolling our borders facing Batam more often and consider having military presence right at the shores

Probably nothing would have happened except a scare even if the rocket was somehow made and launched. To get something that far and with a decently sized warhead (maybe 1-2kg so around maybe like 2-4 hand grenades worth) probably would be very difficult, plus you have to test your system if it could make 18km. My guess would be that it would sorta work like a cruise missile with wings on the side or would have quite a big rocket booster and be maybe 3m long. If they took the cruise missile approach it would most likely make the 18km to singapore but would do so quite slowly, likely intercepted or blew off course, it would be the most likely to just do this by strapping rockets and an explosive to an rc plane or something. Now the pure rocket approach would take much longer and need quite a bit of tests, before the actual launch, very hard to cover up that sorta thing. Plus even if it did damage marina bay sands, it would likely pack so little punch the room it hit would likely still be intact albeit stuff inside was damaged and the glass broke

Reading this bought back some repressed memories.Racist attacks similar to or worse than the ones we've seen this year could happen, targeting people of Muslim descent or Indonesians, with our government throwing the book at the people behind the racist attacks.

I highly doubt their rocket tech can hit anything at will. Might hit something, but unlikely it's the intended target.

The rocket probably wouldn't reach singapore, worst it can do is land on some unlucky ship on the strait.

politically either a rally around the flag effect that allows them to push through our version of the patriot act, and other authoritarian legislation to consolidate control in the name of national security
or a huge hit to government credibility that results in a right wing party being elected to parliament that poses a real electoral challenge to the incumbent.

Had the terrorists managed to launch their rocket, it would most likely have landed in the water unnoticed. And Shanmugam would have to find other material to go on his total defence is important, we need to monitor everybody with TraceTogether blah blah prattle

Announcement
If they indeed have a rocket launcher, the bigger threat is that they might move closer until it is within an effective range. In such cases, I think we should be patrolling our borders facing Batam more often and consider having military presence right at the shores

Given the amount of military equipment RSAF is buying from Israel, i personally suspect that sg already have installations of Iron Dome to take down missiles on the trajectory.
