HDFC Bank is seeking a license to open its first branch in Singapore, according to a «Bloomberg» report citing unnamed sources. When contacted by the news outlet, a spokesperson for the Monetary Authority of Singapore said that the regulator does not comment on dealings with financial institutions.

The bank is planning to target the Indian diaspora through various offerings including savings, term deposits, mortgages and more. According to government data, Singapore is home to approximately 650,000 non-resident Indians and persons of Indian origin.

Singapore retains its crown as the most livable city for Asian ex-pats

The city remained on top given its low crime rates.
Singapore remains the most livable city for Asian expatriates, according to ECA International’s Location Ratings.
ECA rates cities based on liveability factors such as availability of health services, housing and utilities, isolation, access to a social network and recreational and leisure facilities, infrastructure, climate, personal safety, socio-political tensions, and air quality.
Singapore’s low crime rates make it an attractive location for expats, said ECA.
Behind Singapore are Tokyo, Japan (2nd), Wellington, New Zealand (2nd), Adelaide, Australia (2nd), and Brisbane, Australia (5th).

It started a a financial hub for indonesians i think. Then it went global.
During the time when IMF forced the closure of many Indon private banks, many of them run road and transferred their funds to Sg for safe keeping. Depositors were royally screwed.
