She explained that she was trying to take medicine for her ailments and wanted to wash it down with water from her bottle when a staff from the coffee shop approached her to warn her against doing so.

Dumb old fart. Everybody drink water for a reason don't need to explain.
If never take medicine will die can walk a few steps away and drink the water to take medicine if the staff disallowed as it is already stated clearly on the sign.
If you are not happy with it just don't patronise it.
