The fight for the canine's custody saw the case between Dr Tan Kok Chye, 37, and his ex-girlfriend, Ms Connie Tan, 30, brought up all the way to the highest court in the land on Thursday.

According to The Straits Times, Ms Tan and Dr Tan adopted the dog, Sasha, in August 2008 when they were living in Alabama. When they broke up, Ms Tan returned to Singapore with the dog in November of the same year, and registered herself as the dog's owners with the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority.

When Sasha disappeared in March last year, it was traced to Dr Tan's mother's apartment in Cavenagh Road. Ms Tan then sued her ex-boyfriend and his mother.

Justice Chao Hick Tin said: "The case should never have come to court at all."

Justice V. K. Rajah said the case seemed to be about a contest of wills, and not about the dog.
