A man wielding a knife was shot dead during a confrontation with police officers at Block 33 Bendemeer Road, near Boon Keng, on Wednesday (March 23).

The police said during a press conference on Wednesday night that the 64-year-old man was walking around the foot of the HDB block shouting and brandishing a knife at around 4pm.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man came out of a unit and officers told him to drop the weapon but he refused, and walked towards them.

The police officers fired three taser shots at the man and retreated but he continued to walk towards them.

"As there was imminent threat to the safety of the officers, one of the officers fired a shot from his pistol at the man, and the man fell to the ground," said the police.

The officer performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man, who had a gunshot wound in his chest.

He was unconscious when taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5.13pm.

The man was wanted by the Central Narcotics Bureau, and drug apparatus was found in his flat.

The man was also being investigated for offences of rash act and voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty.

He is said to have then thrown items out of his window and when officers engaged him, he used a chair to injure an officer, added the police.

This is the second time in two months that a police officer has had to shoot a man with a knife.

On Feb 17, a man was shot during a confrontation with police officers outside Clementi Neighbourhood Police Centre, in Clementi Avenue 5.

The police said then that the 49-year-old man was seen holding a knife and standing outside the police station and when officers approached him, he shouted incoherently. The man refused to comply and charged towards one of them.

The officer fired one shot with his service revolver, and the man was conscious when he was taken to the hospital and was in a stable condition.

This man not bad, kenna 3 taser shots and could continue to walk towards the police officers, should have sent him for commando or special operations training in his younger days.

If the man is walking towards and not running and charged towards my uncle think is wrong sop. Polis have to open fire in the air 1st as warning thereafter then fire at target. The polis man is in trouble now.

Thought all SPF service revolvers have laser sight on them? If yes then the cop should have aimed below the torso to make him immobile. Probably cop was kancheong but then again can't really blame him. In that kind of situation facing a knife wielding Siao Lang, the poor cop was left with no other choice but to follow his gut instinct and just shoot the aggressor. Then again good riddance to this kind of human thrash. For this kind of case, SPF going to do a major investigation and in the end absolve the cop of any blame in the name of self defence.

I think all policemen should work in teams with at least a protocol immobilise an assailant by gunfire, by other policemen on behalf of the policeman the assailant is attacking or facing, vz discrete hand signals after the taser is used (tasers should be used with less hesitation if assailant is armed).

E.g. A verbal or physical hand command would be a command to shoot at the leg because the facing policeman (preferably the team leader who has since drawn the armed assailant's attention) feels increasingly unsafe or that gunfire is needed to immobilise the assailant for minimum overall bloodshed. One or more shots may be fired, depending on how dangerous the situation is or how much the controlling policeman is requesting, suffice to say, in an open area, there is more than enough opportunity to target the assailants legs, whilst the lead (targeted) policeman still retains the option of firing point blank if these leg immobilisation protocols fail.

Such an fire upon command would be a great show of team coordination and force, which would remind the assailant that he is facing a capable team of policemen and that the policeman he is targeting doesn't need to fire his own weapon for an escalated and progressive takedown by gunfire.

Too many times, targeted policemen have shot assailants in the chest using self defence as an excuse, but given significant superiority in firepower and numbers, self defence is a weak and tenuous excuse. Could this be an discrete eugenics national protocol to eliminate citizens which the state deems unfit, or to silence the assailant, because the dead cannot speak for themselves?

Hopefully, the police have a proper protocol to improve the survival of assailants, especially those facing mental stress and are unable to control themselves. They have a right to medical treatment and a chance to turn over a new leaf. There should thus be more efforts made to immobilise assailants, rather than shooting them dead.

AFAIK, all policemen patrol in pairs, so there has to be some coordination between the pair about the stepwise use of force to neutralize a violent assailant, with minimum blood loss. In due course, or by bystander video recordings, society will demand that the video recordings are made transparent vz publicly accessibility to view. The number of people shot dead by policemen vs the number of cases involving police gunfire should also be recorded and audited through the years as one indicator of protocol quality and service performance measure.
