Ensure bulk of scholarships go to Singaporeans

THE reply by the National University of Singapore (NUS) last Saturday ('NUS' merit-based admissions policy puts Singaporeans first') to Mr Adam Liew ('The 'Singaporean first' myth'; last Thursday) stated that there is a clear differentiation of benefits between Singaporeans and international students.

According to NUS, Singaporeans are automatically entitled to subsidised education, and that there are schemes in place to ensure that needy Singaporean students are not denied a tertiary education.

There are several hundred scholarships, covering tuition fee and living expenses, awarded yearly to foreign nationals to study selected undergraduate programmes at NUS and Nanyang Technological University.

These scholarships, funded by the Ministry of Education, require recipients to work in any Singapore-registered company for a period of three or six years after graduation.

My concern is that millions of taxpayer dollars are spent in funding these scholarships while many Singaporeans are deprived of places in local universities and must pay much more to study abroad.

The ministry must review and tweak its policy. It can reassure Singaporeans by ensuring that the majority of government-funded scholarships go to them.

I'm just wondering has our gahment done the Math... What are the return of investment for sponsoring such foreign students?

Re: **several hundred scholarship given to foreigners to study in Spore universities

Should ask MOE, a lot, if not all of them seem to end up as teachers. We have a shortage of Teachers but an increasing demand for them. I think they are getting more desperate every year

Re: **several hundred scholarship given to foreigners to study in Spore universities

With the limited talents within your country, this is the very least that your government can do.

Re: **several hundred scholarship given to foreigners to study in Spore universities

Like they say. "we are daft, not good enuf".

Imagine the taxpayers' $$ spent on scholarship, AND the subsidy spent on
transport n healthcare..??????
And look at their calculative concessions given to Senior Citizens in SBS/MRT.
So stingy on our very own people BUT squander BIG on foreigners, NDP,
Post election dinners, etc.

REAL BIG TKS TO THE 60% DAFTS

Singapore grants scholarships to Vietnamese students

(VOV) - The Singapore embassy in Vietnam has given scholarships worth a total of US$702,000 to six students in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The students will fly to Singapore from July 27 to follow three or four-year academic programmes at the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Singapore Management University (SMU).

The full scholarships are provided by the Singapore Government. Each student will receive US$117,000, which includes school fees, a return plane ticket and daily living expenses.

The scholarship recipients are Phan Cong Minh from the Hanoi University of Technology, Do Tuan Nguyen from the National Economics University and Nguyen Minh Tam from the Foreign Trade University; Nguyen Quoc Duy Tan and Le Trung Hieu from the HCM City University of Technology, and Ngo Phan Bao Tran from the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Re: **several hundred scholarship given to foreigners to study in Spore universities

after read so many threads over so many years, and then I finally go check MOE website. I suggest netizens do this together so whoever is giving the scholarship cannot try to fake us anymore.

There is this thing call tuition grant. MOE website say sinkies get free. PR and foreigner must sign 3 year bond to get it. Poly and Uni all got. This is a subsidy, not scholarship. It is here http://sam11.moe.gov.sg/tass/menu/

Then the MOE web also got ASEAN and many types country specific scholarship. This one is go secondary school and JC and Uni also got. This one is scholarship, not subsidy. It is here http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/scholarships/

I think we need to be clear. Subsidy is pay a part of the fee. Scholarship is pay for all the fee and also give stipend.
We must ask them how much scholarship each year they give is for secondary, how many is for JC and how many is for Uni. And ask them WHY. Ask them what is the KPI for give these scholarship. If we agree with KPI, we support. If we don't agree with the KPI, we fuck them. Then we ask them the KPI got meet or not.

I think like this easier for citizens to get idea how much money we spending and worth it or not. Agree?

And also, can someone ask TT about all these scholarship? Did he have a hand in them? Can he explain?

Re: **several hundred scholarship given to foreigners to study in Spore universities

My friend,

What you have written is just the tip of the massive iceberg. Do you know what many non-paying students are paid lavishly to study in the LKY school of public policy? Local students are invited because they are deemed too stupid. Don't ask Kishore, he is fed comfortably to keep his mouth shout and eyes closed. Do you know that they even cleared the college green area to house them for free? This is not counting the many more at NTU and NUS.It is phenomenal. Do you also know that teachers are imported from overseas and paid about $20K a month plus housing to teach English in Singapore Schools? Some have been here more than 20 years. They are even given a much lesser work load than our local teachers and teated like Gods because of directive from MOE? Don't bother to ask Heng Swee Kiat. What he knows is only what the gulity senior staff at MOE wants him to know. He is like a mushroom, kept in the dark and fed shit because those in positions in MOE are flexing power and intend to continue so.
We pride ourselves as being proficient in English but we get largely unqualified, retired and mostly rejected teachers from Northern countries to teach basic grammer. We should be infuriated by this action but our ignorance ensured by MOE have keep us at bay. You do not have to believe me, just go and check especially the premium schools.
A true incident- About 4 years ago. An expat teacher engaged in inappropriate behaviour with a female 17 year old. They were found out as the girl became pregnant. The school hushed up the case, got the parents to handle the abortion, expelled the girls permanently from the school and did nothing to the teacher. This Ang-mo teacher is still teaching in the school hitting on others and given huge bonuses. Oh. He teaches mostly drama and he stays here with his wife.

My friend, do not bother to find out more, it will only serve to infuriate you and damage your health and most importantly- you cannot do a single thing about this. These are not made up facts but truly only a bit of the shit generated by MOE. We had only transisting ministers like TCH, Tharman, NEH- they know nothing. Their role was only ceremonial. If the nation conducts an enquiry into MOE, for sure many will have to face the firing squad.

I am happily retired principal with a comfortable pension but cannot come to terms of how I conducted myself professional over 40 years.

Re: **several hundred scholarship given to foreigners to study in Spore universities

why they give is simple.

giving it to us, they are hoping that we will stay. giving it to you makes no difference as you are going to stay anyway.
