Seven caught gambling near mosque

Compiled by Khairul Ashraf Kammed

THE call for Friday prayers (solat Jumaat) from a nearby mosque in Petaling Jaya did not deter seven Muslim men who were caught gambling in a premises disguised as a cyber cafe. Apparently, it was not the first time that the premises, which is located in PJ Old Town, had been raided by officers from Bukit Aman.

Metro Ahad reported that seven gamblers aged between 23 and 58, a gambling operator and a 16-year-old girl were detained. Police also confiscated RM1,200 cash and 74 computers which were used as gambling machines. Supt Maszely Minhad of Bukit Aman’s secret society, anti-vice and gaming division said his unit got a tip-off about the gambling place.

According to him, the location was at a strategic spot as it was surrounded by other shops as well. The police, he said, would notify the local authorities about the premises so that its electrical supply would be terminated. All those detained will be investigated under the Open Gambling House Act.
