I know Chiang did not fight a great war but he did led the nation through the terrible 7 years Sino-Japanese war from 1937-45. At the end, China was terribly wounded but survived under Chiang leadership.
Chiang should be credited as a national hero in chinese history. You can't deny a man his legacy.

Generalissimo Chiang is a very complicated, hard to understand character in modern chinese history.

But I regard him as a chinese hero.

Chiang, an inept leader, was initally 'correct' to save his strength to deal with the commies after the japs, typical of disunited chinks during that era e.g. Wu vs Li during the late Ming dynasty.

He was outwitted by the commies to commit his best troops against the japs and had to depend on the regional 'warlords'. He was a survivor despite several attempts by his warlords to stage a coup. However his distrust of generals caused him dearly as he tried to direct the civil war against the commies at the divisional level. The corruption , at the core of the KMT, thanks to imported 'warlords' sealed his fate.
