A man who molested female victims on their way home late at night or early in the morning in mostly Housing Board lifts was sentenced to 7 1/2 years ' jail and 13 strokes of the cane on Friday.

Technician Mohamed Shah Abu Bakar, 39, committed nine offences including outrage of modesty and aggravated outrage of modesty against five victims within a week in February this year.

He had also exposed himself to two victims in 2011.

In July, he pleaded guilty to four charges involving three victims aged 13 to 21. The rest were taken into consideration.

The prosecution had highlighted various aggravating factors in this case to urge the court for a total sentence of seven to eight years' jail plus caning.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Crystal Tan Yan Shi had said that Shah's modus operandi was to drive his car specifically in the Yishun and Sembawang area to stake out young victims who were going home alone either late at night or early in the morning.

He had targeted his attack on the victims in the lift which was a confined space.

He committed the offences usually after a round of drinks with his friends so that he would "feel brave and then look for young attractive girls in HDB void decks to expose himself... '', said the prosecutor.

The victims suffered harm and psychological trauma after the incident.

Most said they were now afraid of going into the lifts with strangers.

One or two felt "paranoid'' after the incident.

Shah, who is married with three children, could have been jailed for up to five years, fined, caned or received a combination of the sentences for each aggravated molestation.

For molest, the maximum punishment is two years' jail, fine and caning.
