Poison pen letters hit Sengkang

SINGAPORE - Even before the date for the next General Election has been announced, a poison pen letter has surfaced in Sengkang.

Written on a piece of A4-size paper in both English and Mandarin, it has been stuffed into the letter boxes of residents there, apparently since last week.

In it, the anonymous author accuses the People's Action Party (PAP) of being responsible for the high cost of living and the 7-per-cent GST, among other complaints.

The police said that a report has been made, and investigations are in progress.

MediaCorp understands that this case falls under the Sedition Act, where the offender could be fined up to $5,000 and/or given a maximum jail term of three years.

When Ms Ong K C, a Sengkang resident, opened her mailbox on Monday evening, she was surprised to see the letter. Alerting the media yesterday, the administrator, who is in her 40s, said "the comments made in the letter are subjective, and they cannot represent the voice of the masses".

While she does not support any political party, Ms Ong said this is not an appropriate way to air one's dissatisfaction.

Her Member of Parliament in Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency, Mr Charles Chong, who had heard about the letter, said its statements were "too broad and general to be addressed".

He added: "Residents can read it and decide for themselves if the comments are credible."

Other MPs in Sengkang confirmed that their residents had told them about the letter. MP and North East district mayor Teo Ser Luck said: "For me, work goes on, and the letter won't change what we're doing to serve the residents."

Yesterday, MediaCorp came across many letter boxes that had been stuffed with copies of the letter. Some could also be seen lying discarded in rubbish bins.

The PAP headquarters said they are aware of the matter, and Ms Ong is not the only person to have informed them about the letter.

PAP HQ executive director Lau Ping Sum said they had received anonymous letters in the past. Since the Sengkang letter is an anonymous one, the HQ would not be pursuing the matter, Mr Lau added.

Soon they will conveniently find a scapegoat bogeyman .

I will print LHL on top of the coin pile picture and distribute it in my constituency.

and the picture is telling the fucking truth. don't think I can be charged under the Sedition Act.

Ahh!! Because of that Letter. Now the have mobilized All these.

=> So what is the appropriate way? Keeping quiet and allowing the FAPee TRAITORS to leeplace you with FTrash as you quietly go about serving NS + reserve service?

Since all the letter boxes have anti-junk mail protection, don't rule out the possibility that this could be FAPee TRAITORS' insider job to justify clamping down on dissent to take the heat off themselves!

I agree with you . They are taking preemptive action to cull the dissidents .

Like Nero burning his own city .

If PAP MPs say that it's "too broad and and general to be addressed. Residents can read it and decide for themselves if the comments are credible," and "work goes on, and one letter won't change what we're doing...," how then could it fall under the Sedition Act?

In any case, I haven't read the letter. But I'm sure that the government is responsible for the 7% GST which pours kerosene on dried wood already burning in flame with rising living and housing costs, even hilariously claiming kerosene to be rain to help fight fire and rehydrate.

Whether appropriate way or not is not what she say but what people think is ok. SLowly, you learn sinkies... Keep it up..

On April Fool's Day I opened my mailbox in the morning and received a sinister letter of a similar nature too.

It read: "I love you so much Harry." And next to the sentence was one word that was very tiny in print, that poor 50-year-old me had to walk all the way to go and buy a magnifying glass at the stationery shop across the traffic light just to be able to see it.

To cut the story short, after buying the thing I decided to read it there together with the Indian shopkeeper.

When the word finally grew bigger it read "Potter." and two old men got a great laugh that day.

He will charge you. He is paid by Giro not in coins.

Who did MediaCorp "understand" from?

The Attorney-General (whose only responsibility is to advise the Government)? Or is the reporter making a wild guess? Or is this paragraph intentionally inserted to scare people?

Anti-PAP sentiments take a new turn

Anti-People’s Action Party (PAP) sentiments seem to have taken a new turn. The local press has reported that a “poison letter” has been “stuffed into letter boxes” in HDB heartland areas such as Sengkang, Punggol and Marine Parade.

The flier, headlined “The truth that every citizen must know”, is said to be critical of the PAP. According to the Straits Times, the flier was “an A4-sized sheet with the criticisms in English and Chinese, made allegations about corruption and exploitation and complained about cost of living issues, among other things.”

The Today paper says the distribution of such fliers falls under the Sedition Act which states, among other things, that a seditious tendency is one which seek:

(a) to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the Government;

(b) to excite the citizens of Singapore or the residents in Singapore to attempt to procure in Singapore, the alteration, otherwise than by lawful means, of any matter as by law established;

(c) to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the administration of justice in Singapore;

(d) to raise discontent or disaffection amongst the citizens of Singapore or the residents in Singapore

In 2007, the opposition Workers’ Party was targeted with similar fliers. In November of that year, three boys were paid to distribute anti-WP fliers at the restaurant where the party was celebrating its 50th anniversary.

As The Online Citizen reported:

When confronted, these teenagers said they were paid by someone to distribute the fliers and posters. TOC was told they were promised $20 for the task.

The three boys were unable to give details of who the person who employed them was and left after WP Organising Secretary Yaw Shin Leong spoke to them.

A police report has been made with regards to the latest incident involving the anti-PAP fliers.

By extension of the above logic :

Does it mean that Oppostion party members can also be charged under The Sedition Act if they were to sell party newspapers -- containing articles critical of the PAP government----in public places ? ?

During election time, Oppostion candidates can also be charged under the Sedition Act if they speak ill of the PAP government at election rallies??

Peasantpore, in this respect, is similar to North Korea.
