One of SDP's stalwarts, Mr Mohd Isa bin Abdul Aziz has passed away. Isa, a member of the party's Central Executive Committee (CEC), died last night of renal failure after suffering a stroke in November 2013. He was 56.

Isa, as he is known to members, joined the SDP in the late 1980s and has always played a leadership role in the party. He stood as an SDP candidate in past elections, the latest in Sembawang GRC in the 2011 GE.

Isa was a staunch believer in the party's cause, steadfastly championing the rights of his fellow Singaporeans. He never wavered in his fight for a democratic Singapore and worked tirelessly towards this ideal.

Even when he was struck with illness, Isa still came for walkabouts and house visits with the party. He would take a break at the void-decks when he was tired after climbing the floors and knocking on doors, but would resume his task when he recovered. He never complained or asked for anything in return.

He was detained without trial under the Internal Security Act in the 1980s which only made him even more determined to seek justice and democracy for Singapore. He liked to joke that his name, Isa which bore the initials of the notorious secret police, struck terror into the hearts of Singaporeans.

Isa had encountered Dr Chee Soon Juan when they were boys in the 1960s, playing football at the MacPherson housing estate at Circuit Road (and ended up quarreling). They did not meet again until 1992 when Dr Chee joined the SDP.

Through the years, the two had become close colleagues. Isa said on several occasions that his biggest wish was to see Dr Chee get into Parliament. "Once you are in Parliament I can retire," he told Dr Chee.

Isa's latest contribution to our nation was the SDP's Malay policy paper A Singapore for All Singaporeans: Addressing the Concerns of the Malay Community where he provided direction and inspiration.

He leaves behind his wife, Madam Norjan, daughters, Naajia and Daanaa, and son, Altaf. His daughters recalled how he would talk to them about politics in Singapore when they were young and impressed upon them the need to stand up for what is right.

Isa was a democrat and a Democrat. The SDP has lost a true leader, Singapore has lost a loyal citizen.

The SDP sends our deepest condolences to Isa's family. He will be missed by all of us but his memory will spur us on. Rest well, good friend.

A man whom you & I didn’t know has passed away

SDP announced that one of its Central Executive Committee members, Mohd Isa bin Abdul Aziz, had passed away due to renal failure.

Who was Mohd Isa bin Abdul Aziz?

I did not know him, and most of you probably did not know him. In fact, I did not even know such a person existed until I read about SDP’s recent announcement. Even now, I do not know much about him, other than what was written in the announcement.

The announcement struck a note on me when it mentioned Isa, a SDP stalwart, had been with the party since the late 1980s. Despite his illness, he still joined party members in walkabouts and house visits, taking a break at void decks when he was tired – before resuming his task.

Without having watched Isa’s political speeches, I would speculate that he did not project an impressive political image on stage – otherwise he would have captured the public’s attention long ago. He was like many of those unknown political heroes whose works, sacrifices and contributions to achieve a more democratic Singapore were often gone unnoticed by members of public.

Unlike people working for the ruling party, these unknown heroes of opposition parties do not receive reward in return for their hard work: no privilege, no mentioning in the media, no national day award. On the contrary, they have plenty to lose: personal time, family members’ time, incurring pocket expenses, social discrimination, career discrimination, risk of legal troubles …. We ought to bear this in mind: they need not have to volunteer for those thankless roles! Isa had contributed more than three decades of his life fighting for what he perceived as a better society for fellow Singaporeans. He could have chosen to spend those precious years with his family, friends or building a career.

I believe Isa must have stood firmly with the SDP when his party was going through its most difficult time as a result of advancing its good cause. Then, the vast machinery of the ruling party and its news media were pounding heavily on SDP. It was a ruthless and unjustifiable campaign carried out to demolish the SDP for challenging its opponent and refusing to recognize what its opponent claimed as “miraculous achievements”. Sadly, the old generation Singaporeans during that time chose to swallow the propaganda, not knowing what valuable rights they had given away and the future consequences of their naivety. Today, many of those Singaporeans are paying the price for their gullibility.

The SDP’s announcement mentioned that Isa’s biggest wish was to see Chee Soon Juan got into parliament. I hope his wish will come true. After all, Chee Soon Juan must have been more than a decent guy, given that he could remain as the SDP leader for so long and has a significant number of supporters behind him – despite a series of highly successful and cruel campaigns against him and his party. Perhaps like Isa, Chee then was probably too focused on what Singaporeans should be entitled to, instead of the game of politics. I personally think that you got to get yourself into parliament first, before you could fight for what you believed to be Singaporeans’ interests.

While we do not know each other, I write to say thank you to Mohd Isa bin Abdul Aziz for his great efforts, stretching over more than three decades, in fighting for what he perceived as a better Singapore for all of us. In the process of doing it, he must have suffered a lot and been ridiculed.

Mohd Isa, I am sorry for not knowing about your presence and the work you had been quietly doing for Singaporeans.

Thank You and Rest In Peace, Isa.

SDP to hold memorial service for Mohd Isa

The SDP will hold a memorial service for Mohd Isa who passed away in January this year. The service will honour the memory of a long-time leader of the party who toiled quietly behind the scenes to bring democracy to our country.

The service will allow colleagues and friends to remember Isa and to say a proper goodbye to a cherished member of the SDP family.

The occasion will also be used to launch the Mohd Isa Bursary Award where, as the name suggests, we will award bursaries to students who come from poorer family backgrounds.

It is the SDP's belief that education can, and must, be used to level up society. Students who are needy are often at a disadvantage when it comes to the schools they attend and the resources that are available to them for their education. The SDP will do our part to make our society more equal, starting by assisting poorer students with financial awards.

As a more comprehensive strategy to help in this leveling up, the SDP will be publishing our alternative education policy in the near future. Our present education system is skewed towards the elite which has created an unhealthy state of affairs in this country.

In the paper, the party will present concrete proposals to remedy this problem as well as prepare our future generations to not just to survive but excel in a rapidly changing global community.

The award is appropriately named after Isa who has always emphasised the importance of making our education system a means for the poorer sections of our population to compete fairly.

Details of the award will be announced at the memorial service which is open to members of the public. Join us to honour a father, friend, and forever-proud Singapore Democrat.

Event: Mohd Isa Memorial Service
Date: 8 March 2014, Saturday
Time: 7:30pm
Venue: Chinese Success Media, Bras Basah Complex (location map http://www.csm.sg/csmf/csm-training-seminar-room-rental-booking-singapore-direction-map.jpg)
ALL are welcome.

SDP members and friends came together on Saturday to remember and honour the late Mohd Isa who passed away peacefully in January this year. Isa was a Central Executive Committee and was much loved and respected by those who knew him.

Former SDP chairman Mr Mohd Jufrie said that Isa was so committed to the cause of democracy that he had joined the opposition in the 1980s even when he was still working in the Housing and Development Board (HDB). This was a time when Mr Lee Kuan Yew was still the prime minister and the PAP had complete control over politics in Singapore.

He also pointed out that Isa was detained under the ISA but continued to work for democracy after he was released. "It showed the courage of this man and his conviction to fight against injustice and oppression," Mr Jufrie said.

Isa's teammate at the Sembawang GRC in the 2006 elections, Ms Chee Siok Chin, also spoke at the memorial service. She remembered Isa as a man of strong beliefs but always tempered his conviction with reason.

She recounted how they had a heated argument during the campaign but Isa came in the following day with a smile, ready to work again. "He was not the sort to hold a grudge or harbour ill-feelings," Ms Chee remembered.

The microphone was passed around and several members and friends spoke warmly of the man whom they knew as a quiet but steadfast leader of the SDP.

The one acknowledgement that everyone made was that Isa did not crave the limelight but was always there solidly backing the party in both word and deed.

Dr Chee Soon Juan gave the closing remarks and said that Isa personified the values and principles of the SDP. He recounted how Isa had campaigned with the party even when he was weak from his illness, never giving up and keeping to his word to fight for democracy until the very end.

In honouring the man, SDP has launched the Mohd Isa Bursary Award. Because of Isa's personal commitment to better education especially for lower income families, the SDP will award three students $500 each annually to help them cope with school-related expenses.

This is consistent with SDP's principle to level up society through education. The current education system is elitist and unfair towards students from poor family backgrounds. The SDP will be publishing its policy paper on education in the near future.

Party Chairman Mr Jeffrey George announced the criteria of the Award which is open to full-time students who are Singapore citizens or have either parent as a Singapore citizen and who come from families with per capita household income (gross) of $450 per month or less. Details of the selection criteria and application process will be announced soon.

Professor Paul Tambyah, who also spoke at the service, said this was a modest start but the awards will at least help three students in Singapore who face financial difficulties.
