School broken into despite being near police station
MALACCA: The school has two security guards and it is very close to the Batu Berendam police station, but this did not deter thieves from breaking in. They carted off 14 notebook computers, an LCD projector and a camcorder worth RM78,000 from SJK (C) Wen Hua which is a mere 250m away from the police station. Headmaster Ong Ching Nam, 56, said the break-in was discovered by a teacher at 6.10am yesterday after noticing the damaged window grille leading to the teachers’ room on the second floor of the school’s main block.
Ong examining the damaged lockers where the 14 notebooks were stolen from during the break-in at SRJK (C) Wen Hua in Batu Berendam early yesterday morning.
“We are shocked as the thieves ransacked the office and teachers’ room, besides breaking into two of the safes,” he said. Fortunately, the safes were empty. “I have been teaching here for 11 years and this is the first such incident,” Ong said. He said the burglary did not affect yesterday’s classes at the 74-year-old school that has 57 teachers and 1,367 students.
The school would notify the state Education Department about the incident, besides seeking a written report from the company providing the security guard services, he said. Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Salehhudin Abd Rahman said police were investigating the incident.
