SM2/SM3 English Bridging Programmes

The Language and Communication Centre administers three bridging programmes for SM2 and SM3 scholars. The programmes develop the scholars' English language proficiency in all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through an integrated approach so that they are able to cope with the demands of using the language at Nanyang Technological University.

SM2

In January 2008 the Centre started to run for the first time a bridging programme for SM2 students. Students go through intensive English training first and then increasingly pick up courses offered by the College of Science and the College of Engineering.

SM2 Accelerated Programme

The Accelerated Programme allows a small group of SM2 students to go through the SM3 program.

SM3

This six-month intensive English programme is conducted for students from January to May. The English modules run concurrently with courses offered by the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

Approach

Our discipline-integrated approach enables students to improve and develop their English language proficiency in a context most relevant to the disciplines of their academic study. Apart from the integration of English and Science, basic communication skills and strategies for academic purposes are woven into the English modules so as to better prepare students for their discipline-related learning. In addition to published course books, we have a specially designed book comprising readings in Mathematics, Science, Economics and Computing. Students design the book cover themselves, and the winning entries are featured here.

“All the tutors are very kind. …I know much more about Singapore through this programme.” –Zhang Lizi

"I enjoyed very much the bridging programme because of the friendship among students and that between tutors and students. It helped us overcome loneliness, made us happy and will last forever." – Yang Yang

"Teachers are very kind and our classmates help each other, which made an atmosphere of a family." –Li Leichen

Firstly, what does SM stand for?

Next, what language were these scholars trained in? Why teach these scholars another language? English some more. At least teach them Mandarin.

Who is paying for this English tution and how much does it cost?
