http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/408081/1/.html

SINGAPORE: A Singapore bus driver was attacked by parang-wielding men in a bold robbery attempt in the southern Malaysian city of Johor Bahru Tuesday evening.

The incident happened on SBS Transit bus service number 160 which had just left the Kotaraya shopping centre.

It was heading for the Woodlands Checkpoint at the border with Singapore.

A caller to MediaCorp's News hotline said the driver was slashed with a parang when he tried to close the door on the men who were trying to board.

An SBS Transit spokesman told Channel NewsAsia that the injured driver would be transferred from the Johor General Hospital to Singapore soon.

He is believed to be a Singapore permanent resident in his early thirties.

It is not known how many passengers were onboard at the time of the incident or if any of them were injured. The assailants fled immediately after the incident.

Service 160 plies between Kotaraya in Johor Bahru and the Jurong East Interchange in Singapore and the journey usually takes about 70 minutes

Johor idea draws flak
By Salma Khalik , HEALTH CORRESPONDENT

A SUGGESTION by Health Minister that Singaporeans might want to consider staying at a nursing home across the Causeway in Johor where it is much cheaper drew flak from two oppostion MPs in Parliament on Tuesday.

Workers' Party chairman and Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim said the suggestion was 'quite a bad indication of affordability of our own health care services here, and also a reflection of our national values'.

Fellow WP member Low Thia Kiang (Hougang) asked: 'Is the Minister suggesting that Singaporeans who cannot afford medical treatment or step-down care here should now consider such facilities in Johor?'

If so, is the minister 'outsourcing the Government's responsibility to provide affordable health care service to Malaysia', he asked.

This riled Mr Khaw Boon Wan.

'I'm not saying that if you are poor I will put you in an ambulance, send you across the Causeway to a Johor nursing home. That is not what I said and please don't twist my words,' he retorted.
