If you are an alumnus, do drop in and read the whole thread. Truly allegorical and you can see Orwell's Animal Farm been played out. We are talking about auto banning, censorship, with all farm animals giving their sincere views including old Major, Snowball and boxer, kid you not.

I'm seeing clones visiting our site.

So far, there are nicks like Roboks, Rowbox, kojakbt45 and even a ThinkaII.

Such nicks are obviously new nicks who intend to impersonate certain forummers.

If I can spot them early, before they clear moderation, I'd just kick them out so their rubbish posts will not pollute this forum.

Any objections?

Always wondered why you did not behave like a normal human being. And I still do wonder.

Its funny how Orwell was right from the very start and how relevent it is today no matter how sophisticated or technically inclined we have become. Note the suggestion on method of auto moderation.

All humans start off by wanting to do the right thing. The desire is honest but the end result is something else. Also note the accommodating tones and creation of a defensive parameters arising from apprehension and fear.

I wonder if Old Man and his party took the same path noting that they started on a strong socialist bent.

This is what typically happens with most forums :

1. Someone with good intentions starts a forum.

2. He invites other members to assists in moderation. (The first mistake as those chosen will invariably be those members who see eye to eye with the host on most issues)

3. Moderators need to justify their selection so they start moderating what they think the host does not like.

4. Member who is moderated gets angry and starts ranting and raving.

5. Moderators gang up with forum host to "fix" the errant member.

6. Member creates new accounts to bypass moderation and enlists other members who are on his side of the fence to take on the moderation team.

7. Animal farm has been created.

I try to avoid all the pitfalls. I only keep out spam. The rest of the stuff I categorise rather than delete. I run things myself and keep and keep every member at arms length so as to avoid becoming part of a clique.

and now i understand why IRC went down the drain... :p

bro scroobal, thanks for the tip
Bro, I too did not realise it until the end of the thread. I then realised that it is a natural human reaction. Got to say Sam knows his stuff. People used to get really personal and abusive with him and the guy still carries on and I thought he was made of Teflon.

I actually went there hoping to find an extract of Lee Wei Ling's letter. Didn't realise it has evolved quite differently.

Another thing that I noted is the genuine fear that the PAP Internet Brigade is actually targetting them. Which is quite bizarre. If you look look at them, I can't recall a single one of them ever raising an issue or discussing a political issue that is detriment to the PAP. What they however do is pass one liners that are cute and cutting at times on something that the press had written on or someone else had raised in a different forum that had been copied there. No different from taxi drivers. I am sure we can still account for all our taxi drivers.

I do however note there are solid forummers like Max who I am sure are waiting for something meaty to discuss on.

Even more bizarre are those who have this notion that the forum host needs to sell IP addresses in order to make ends meet. :p

If paranoia like that keeps these twits out of this forum, I guess things have worked out quite nicely with the move to this new platform.

I am getting the impression that they are fighting a raging battle as we post.

Just thought I'd share the lessons that I've learnt over the last 4 weeks about hosting:

1. The competition and Internet Brigade are constantly trying to get in. On average, there are about 4-5 attempts each day to test the security system or try to enter. Even up to this afternoon, VictorSun still wanted to get into this forum and coax you fellas over to his side. Since I do not support unknown forum hosts, he has not been let in.

2. I found the process of "white listing" very useful. By putting the entire forum on moderation and then granting voice to trusted members, this proves to be very effective from the daily spam attempts to enter our community. The IB/competitors/wierdos have been very persistent, and they are hard at work trying to break up this community. Since forummers have been protected from such attempts here, do not assume that the forces are not at work. There are FULLY ACTIVE even though you dont see them appear in the forum. I see them daily from the forum host level and remove them before them become a threat. If the new forum hosts are not careful or take it for granted that the competition/I.B. are sleeping, you be in for a rude shock when you run your new forum. You can be sure it will descend to the pits just like the old SBF in no time.

Their tactics include : using abusive language, spamming, destroying threads, advertising the clone forums there, character attacks on the forum host, instigating dissatisfication, "planting" undesirable information or evidence to get your forum banned, etc.

So if you really want a free-for-all type of forum with no or light moderation, be prepared for a really tough time ahead.

3. Get your team of moderators ready and get your moderation policy up. But it is not a good idea to be too transparent. Leave some room for leeway for moderator's discretion since those forces out there are constantly testing your system to find weaknesses. As E-Jay said, this is your private forum and not a nation, so those who cant live by your rules can go elsewhere.

4. At the start of your forum, write out all your forum rules clearly so that forummers know what is expected of them.

That is all I can think of for now.

Hope this is food for thought for new forum hosts.
