<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->IN TUESDAY'S report, 'Government help is not 'first port of call'', the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar GRC Sam Tan questioned if government efforts to cushion the recession have lulled Singaporeans into a false sense of security, and would reduce their resilience in future recessions and other times of difficulty.
Resilience is important but Mr Tan's suggestion that the Government should do less during times of economic hardship to help develop public resilience is not as clearcut.
The Government plays a unique role in a free-market economy. It is in a unique position because it sets the rules of the market and is the sole arbiter of economic policy.
The Government alone can take some of the actions needed to mitigate economic hardship. Individual citizens cannot.
While the free market can be counted on to run most of the economy, in times of market failures when prices fail to deliver services society needs such as education and health care, and when the market has its hiccups such as in the current period of a prolonged demand slump, only the Government can ease the pain through policy measures.
Taking away economic measures by the Government that would cushion the blow of the recession will only sharpen the drop into recession and prolong it.
As a result, having the Government 'do less' and making citizens 'do more' for themselves, as Mr Tan suggests, is futile, because there is little people can do.
The Government's role is to step in where the common man cannot, but Mr Tan is suggesting that the Government do otherwise in the case of economic policy.
Mr Tan should remember that the failure of the United States government to act following the stock market crash in 1929 led to the Great Depression of the 1930s.
While I applaud Mr Tan's desire to increase national resilience, cutting government involvement in areas where it is essential is unwise.
The Government's participation in the economy is a unique one which no individual can replace.
Hence, I urge policymakers to be aware of the Government's indispensability in certain areas of public policy. Tan Jiaqi

Public institutions should not be dip into the pockets of the general public each time they need to raise the revenue. Cut the bulls. 20 years ago, starting pay for most employees is still the same as present. Anyone heard of employees telling their prospective employer that it has been many years since they have an increase, or they are faced with a high operating cost because they have more mouths to feed? No right?

Even if you goto a private sector, these organisations will not take customers for granted and raise prices indiscriminately or at the drop of a hat, save for the oil cartel.

If public sectors want to have matching pay with private sectors, they should learn how to better manage their own cost even if there is a lack of market competition to do so. Simply put, you don't take, we don't expect you to give either.

In their own words, the public sector should not live beyond their means. The previous speaker Mr Tan SK has spoken well on this. But do the public sector ever learn?

Maybe PAP asked Sam Tan to make such comments. Otherwise, it puzzles me why would a rational person make this kind of remark, especially from an MP. Maybe PAP ran out of ideas to improve the economy and don't want to get blamed...
Sam should fortify his argument by proposing what he would do if he was just a commoner like anyone of us. Tell a jobless man who has 5 mouths to feed what to do so that he would not reduce his resilience. Why don't we turn the perspective around and question if our government would reduce her resilience by relying heavily on other countries in terms of economic development. If we have learnt the importance of self-resilience by building an army to defend our country, why didn't our leaders apply the same concept to our economy? We let Singapore become one of the worst hit countries in Asia and now our leaders are telling us the government should not be our "first port of call". Maybe PAP should not be our first port of call during election either...

So what is his purpose of existence in parliament and representing his constitutency with such fucked speech? He wants an easy job: collect pay and do nothing in the name of helping Singaporean become resilience. And he himself cannot take the stress of helping the needy? I hope the statement he made should cause him to drown in a dung pit and dissappear for good and save us some cost too.
