Samsung and Huawei crush Apple's smartphone global market share
It wasn't long ago that it looked like Apple would overtake Samsung to grab the biggest chunk of the global smartphone market. But now the company has been pushed into third place by Huawei.

It's funny how quickly things can change. Three months ago it seemed like Apple was on track to grab the global smartphone market share crown from Samsung, only to be shoved into third place by Chinese maker Huawei.

What does this mean for Apple?

Here's a chart that tracks the fight between Apple, Samsung, and Huawei over the past five quarters (courtesy of Bloomberg, based on IDC data):

Well, on a totally business front, market share and revenue (and profits) are two separate things, and it might be foolish to focus too heavily on market share. Look at the dollars and cents, if we take the last quarter revenues and profits, it's clear that market share isn't everything.
  • Samsung - Revenue: $44.7 billion | Profits: $5.3 billion
  • Huawei - Revenue: $26.8 billion | Profits: $2.1 billion
  • Apple - Revenue: $58 billion | Profits: $11.6 billion
See how revenue and profits tell a different story.

But this doesn't mean that Apple shouldn't be worried.

The key to Apple's business is market share. The bigger and more robust market share it can create, the more loyal its customers are, and the more it can sell to them in terms of services and accessories that both help to drive profits and lock users deeper into the ecosystem.

The more handsets Samsung and Huawei sell, the harder it becomes for Apple to expand its ecosystem. The companies may even be able to grab customers away from Apple – especially at the bottom end, where consumers are more sensitive to price – further eroding Apple's iOS ecosystem.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the Huawei effect hits Apple at the core of a vulnerable market – China. Apple has been eyeing China for years now, seeing it as the perfect venue to cause a market explosion.

But this effect hasn't materialized. And with increased pressure from the likes of Huawei, it now seems unlikely. And this could, in the longer term, become a much bigger problem, especially as iPhone sales are going soft all round.

And if Huawei is right, and it is able to grab 50% of the smartphone market share in China, and take the global market share top spot away from Samsung by 2020, this could squeeze the iPhone even more.

While it's never wise to try to predict the future in too much detail, it's hard to not come to the conclusion that Apple's woes are only just beginning, and that the company's focus on services and things like credit cards might be happening at just the right time.

Apple has stagnated since Steve Jobs' death.

This is what happens when instead of a visionary CEO, you appointed a person whose greatest 'achievement' to date was to tell everyone that he is a homosexual.

Huawei still needs to improve its audio quality and its software.

And all Android phone makers need to reduce the bloat and preinstalled crapware in their phones. Chinese phones are especially notorious for this.

Apple was popular iphones from a phenomenal riding on html5 games software development - html5, css3 and JavaScript.

Games like Angry birds and Mario help made Apple sale booms.

And also mp4 sounded compressed technology help Apple iphone sales.

Now dead rotten Apple losing ground to iphone manufacturers Samsung and Huawei through advanced telecom chhip, secured payment NFC chip technology, and now 5G chip and video camera chip technology.

One interesting point. In terms of revenue and profit, Faggot phones is actually doing better than Huawei and Samsung. So it will take a along time for faggot phones to go under. And though I have no love for Faggot products and the eco system. It is a necessary evil because now android and Faggot phones compete with each other. If Faggot phones go under than android will be a monopoly and Android users will suffer due to the lack of competition.

So much fuss about a stupid phone that does nothing for mankind.

The mobile phone has done wonders for mankind. It has saved lives etc by enhancing communications etc. The only thing is the dark side of the smartphone needs to be addressed. Like abuse by employers etc. But tat is up to human kind to address

It's now less of a phone and more of a portable computer that you can use to take photos and make phonecalls.

I do agree.
If Apple goes down Samsung, Huawei and together with Google will make you pay for evry single app and service you pay.

We must never let this happen

Right now 2 dominant eco systems which are fierce competitors has given consumers alot of benefits. And there is great but I hope greater competition amongst handset makers is needed. Flagships mobiles are getting too pricey

Electronic communication has improved but the art of face to face communication is dying. Nobody talks to each other anymore. Even my old fart social group spend too much time sharing stupid videos rather than having a conversation.

The photos are crap and as a computer it does precious little besides running dumb games that waste time.

It's ok, not having a conversation with Burmese scum like u is no lost to society as a whole. If u can get rid of some resident clowns.... things will definitely improve as a whole

Apple have themselves to blame for pricing themselves out of the market.
