Fundraising for woman hacked at Beach Road reaches above 50% of goal in a day

SINGAPORE — A crowdfunding campaign for a woman who was brutally hacked by her estranged husband at Beach Road last month has raised over half of its $105,000 goal on Wednesday (11 May), a day after it went live.
As of 9pm, 801 donors raised $57,535 of the $105,343.86 goal for the victim, Han Hongli, 42, in an online campaign started by charity platform Ray of Hope on Tuesday.
Ray of Hope, together with Han's employer and a non-government organisation (NGO), both unnamed, will use the sum raised to help cover $68,000 of her medical expenses and $8,000 in respite care services.
Other expenses include a 12-month loss of income of $21,600 as well as shelter fees and employment of a full-time caregiver over a six-month period.
According to a description on the campaign's webpage, Ray of Hope said that the sum of the medical fees, tabulated as of 5 May, is likely to increase. The campaign's target will be increased once the updated medical bills are received.
Since her hospital admission, Han has undergone four surgeries on her head, eyes, and hands, said the charity platform. She was advised that she would need two more eye surgeries to regain her eyesight.
Han told Ray of Hope, “I am in great pain every single day since the incident. Thinking about my children keeps me alive.” The Henan native's children, aged 20 and 17, are currently looked after by her family.
A separate fund-raising effort by restaurant owners in the Beach Road area has raised some $20,000 for her.
Han was repeatedly hacked by alleged attacker Cheng Guoyuan, 46, with a chopper on 14 April outside Zhong Hua Steamboat restaurant at 75 Beach Road, as seen in several viral videos.
Nine of the several onlookers who intervened in the attack by flinging objects at Cheng later received awards from the police for their actions.
Cheng, who is also a Chinese national, was charged in court on 16 April with attempted murder.
If found guilty, he can be jailed for life or up to 20 years as well as caned or fined, or both.
