86-year-old governor of Indian state quits after sex scandal
New Delhi - ND Tiwari, 86-year-old governor of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, quit his post Saturday over a sex scandal. The scandal came as an embarrassment for the Congress Party, the ruling partner of India's federal coalition government, which had appointed Tiwari.
Tiwari resigned after a television sting showed video clips of an elderly man, which the Andhra Jyoti television channel claimed was Tiwari, in a compromising position with three women allegedly in the governor's house in state capital Hyderabad.
The governor's office issued a statement Friday evening terming the story as "malicious." It alleged that the tapes were fabricated and obtained a court order restraining broadcast.
Tiwari, however, resigned on Saturday citing reasons of health.
His resignation followed a day of protests led by opposition political parties in Andhra Pradesh.
Congress Party spokesman Manish Tiwari said that the governor was likely to fight a legal case to prove his innocence but resigned in keeping with the dignity of his post.
Tiwari has been a member of the Congress Party for several decades and is a former chief minister of the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
He was in news in 2008 when 29-year-old Rohit Shekhar moved a paternity suit in the Delhi High Court claiming he was Tiwari's son. The court refused to pass any orders on technical grounds.
The post of governor is of titular nature but he plays an important role if a state government falls or is dismissed. The governor is the direct link between the state and the federal government in such cases.
Andhra Pradesh, which is ruled by a Congress Party-led government, is currently in turmoil over the demand for the carving out of a separate state of Telangana.
