SINGAPORE: A sales executive was fined S$5,000 on Monday for failing to keep a proper lookout when filtering lanes, resulting in a collision that killed a motorcyclist.
Adrian Yap Wei, aged 30, was also banned from driving for three years.
The court was told the bespectacled man committed the negligent act in December 2012 at about 11.25am.
The car was travelling along Corporation Road towards Boon Lay Way when it collided with a motorcycle ridden by 30-year-old Low Shihua, a jockey at the Singapore Turf Club.
Low was flung into the air after his motorcycle hit a tree along the centre divider.
He died at the scene.
In her submissions, prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz said she was not asking for a custodial term, as CCTV footage showed the deceased was travelling at a "fast speed".
In his mitigation, the court heard that Yap is very remorseful, and had glowing testimonies from his superior and school.
The defence also highlighted that the speed at which the deceased had travelled was a contributing factor in the accident. - CNA/ec
