Singapore PM's salary stuns White House official

A senior White House official on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 admitted he was floored by the news that Singapore's prime minister earned five times more than US President George W. Bush. "I'm going to emigrate and run for office in Singapore," the official said on condition he be identified only as "a senior administration official who sits in disbelief after reading that story."

Prime Minister panics over public fury

April 12, 2007 - In panic over public fury, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong offers to freeze his salary for five years. The Singapore leader told parliament he would forego the salary hike which would give him an annual income of more than US$2 million a year, up from the $1.62 million he made last year. "To make it quite clear why I'm doing this, and also to give me the moral standing to defend this policy with Singaporeans, I will hold my own salary at the present level for five years. Whatever increases (I get), I will donate to suitable good causes." (TODAY, front page, April 12, 2007)
