S. Korean gets 22 years in jail for being habitual rapist
SEOUL: A Seoul court on Friday sentenced a 27-year-old man to 22 years and six months in jail for habitually raping and robbing women, including one in her 60s, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The repeat offender, identified only by his last name, Jo, was convicted on charges of breaking into homes and raping women in front of their families or housemates since 2004, when he raped a 68-year-old woman, the Seoul Northern District Court said.
In June of last year, he broke into a semi-basement room and robbed a woman of 190,000 won (US$166) after raping her. In July of this year, he broke into another home to rape a woman, where he stabbed a family of three when they tried to stop him.
"The defendant has no past criminal record, but that is because his crimes were not exposed," court officials said.
"Even taking into consideration the fact that he surrendered to the police as their DNA match closed in on him, and the fact that he admitted to all of his crimes, there is no choice but to give him the heaviest sentence possible under current law."
The court also ordered him to wear an electronic tracking device for 20 years. - Bernama
