Apparently the two blocks in Toa Payoh rented out to foreign casino workers is insufficient. And while HDB is rushing to complete the construction of rental flats in Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris to house them, the two casino operators are also seeking accomodation for its thousands of foreign workers in Batam. I wouldn't be surprise if they are looking at JB as well.

S’pore casino operators seek lodging in Batam

Business people in the property sector have asked the Batam municipal council to consider issuing a permit for lodging facilities for casino workers from Singapore.

Operators of the Marina Bay Sand and Resort World Sentosa casino in Singapore, which opened last month, are reportedly keen to cooperate with their Indonesian business partners for possible accommodation for their employees.

With Batam being only an hour by ferry from Singapore, they, according to a councilor, expect to save operational costs.

“We must accommodate the aspirations and opinions from other stakeholders on this proposal, because it could socially impact on Batam later,” Councilor Yudi Kurnain told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Yudi said the casino workers would not commute from Singapore to Batam daily, depending on their work shifts.

The business people and council members have different requests on their applications.

The business people want the hotels, flats and apartments, currently available in Batam, to be designated for casino workers.

However, the council members wished that if the proposal was approved, the dormitory should be built within a cluster and separated from residential areas.

“We must anticipate this as their presence could induce prostitution and the distribution of alcoholic drinks,” Yudi said.

He added the idea had developed to the point of discussions on technical aspects, such as special ferry routes for the casino workers.

There are five ferry ports connecting Batam and Singapore.

If approved, the construction would begin this year.

“Impacts from the gaming industry in Singapore would spur growth in the business sector in Batam,” said Yudi, who is from the National Mandate Party.

“However, we hope for a positive growth.”

Meanwhile, Riau Islands chapter Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) head Asyari Abbas said MUI would further study the proposal.

“Helping someone or any party to commit a sin is sinful. Gambling is prohibited by our religion. We would be helping to facilitate gambling,” Asyari said.

“We must study this thoroughly before issuing a decision.

“So far, none of the stakeholders have invited us to discuss the matter.”

I think what Mr Asyari is trying to say is "how come no one comes over with a bag of cash yet?"

Just show him the money....and all SINs are forgiven & forgotten, & spent later...then it becomes sinful again!:D

Bright idea to house all the foreign staff of the IRs. There are just too many of them, and, if house them in sinkapore, it is too obvious that those jobs supposely meant for local are not theirs.

Keep the total number of foreign staff out of sight of the locals, besides saving a bundle on housing here.

Even without voting out MBT, housing price/rental will collapse once this bright idea is implement. Who said MBT determines the price of properties here ?

i really really feel the end of singapore casino is near.
I can feel it.

if a company have so much overhead and no tourists, with no local market, it will die cock stand.
