With all six frigates in service, the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) Formidable—class Frigate Squadron is fully operational.
The Defence Ministry says the Frigate Squadron marks a significant milestone in the Navy’s transformation to a third generation fighting force.
Mindef says its state—of—the—art combat capabilities and systems will enhance the Navy’s ability to protect Singapore’s sea lines of communication and boost its capability to integrate operations with the Army and Air Force.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said: "Singapore is situated at the key international sea routes of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, which link the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Threats to the freedom of navigation — whether they come from pirates or terrorists — will have an adverse impact on the economy and on regional peace and stability."
Fifty per cent of global oil shipments, including 70 per cent of Japan’s oil imports and 80 per cent of China’s oil imports, pass through the Malacca Strait everyday.
Mr Teo said: "As a littoral state, Singapore will continue to work together with our neighbouring littoral states to ensure that the Malacca and Singapore Straits are safe to allow freedom of navigation for global trade."
Mr Teo also touched on the recent surge in the frequency of piracy attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the coast off Somalia.
He said as a maritime nation, Singapore supports the ongoing efforts by both the UN and International Maritime Organisation to address the problem.
He added: "The shipping community also has to play its part by undertaking proactive measures to enhance the security of their ships. They should make use of appropriate transit windows, speeds and routing, such as the Maritime Security Patrol Area (MSPA) that has been established by the multinational maritime force assembled in—theatre, to safely transit their ships through the Gulf of Aden.
“A coordinated effort by the multinational maritime force and the shipping community would contribute to greater security in the Gulf of Aden and deter piracy."

What a fucking waste of money. The economy is going to shit, thoudands of people unemployed, and the govt. spends billions of dollars on these useless for show frigates. What has the RSN done with all their billions of dollars of ships? Stop piracy in Straits fo Malacca? Made any arrest of pirates? Prevented any hijacking of ships? Deployed to Somalia to help the international force there? NO NO NO. What is this bullshit about protecting shipping lanes when there has been no record of success at all. U telling me that that u need multibillion dollars worth of ships to combat pirates in wooden ship? Pookie Mah the PAP
