ROMANIA responded swiftly yesterday to a request from Singapore, lifting immunity for an embassy staff member here and distancing itself from remarks made by its former charge d'affaires over a fatal car accident last year.

It said that since former charge d'affaires Silviu Ionescu has been suspended from his diplomatic job, it will be up to him to decide whether to return to Singapore for a coroner's inquiry next month.

A Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Romanian MFA) spokesman told The Straits Times yesterday that his country would do 'everything possible in order to maintain and enhance good relations between Romania and Singapore'.

Doesn't matter, it's a purely symbolic move. No way in hell will Ionescu come back

Look at the words of the report, "It is entirely up to him to decide if he wants to return to Singpaore"... Errhhh... anyone in the right frame of mind will not return and risk jail term. It will be different if the Romaninan govt had said they WILL return this Romanian crook. But basically they are telling Singapore govt, "do what you can within your power to get this guy because we are not going to help you or him..."
There is no chance that this guy will comeback to Singapore. There is a higher probability that Singapore will qualify for 2014 World Cup. Honestly.

It depends. The statement may have been a gaffe, but lifting of immunity practically means the Singapore and Romania police can now work together and the Romania police hands are now free to arrest and deport Ionescu.

The issue is this takes place or Ionescu can get off the Romania police's hook with his connections and $$$.

if an interpol arrest warrant is issued, romania has to send him back for investigations.. being an eu country, they have to cooperate fully..

all depends on how far the s'pore govt wants to pursue the matter
