Robbers ditch heavy ATM in botched bank heist
Unsuccessful withdrawal: The ATM left in front of the bank in Taman Tasek, Johor Baru, after the robbers could not carry it away.
JOHOR BARU: A group of robbers left an ATM by the roadside because it was too heavy to load onto their four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The robbers had been attempting to flee with the machine, which was taken from a bank branch in Taman Tasek here.
Johor acting CID chief Asst Comm Azizan Anan said four robbers wearing face masks attempted the heist at about 5am yesterday.
“CCTV footage showed that the group arrived in a dark-coloured Proton Waja and a four-wheel-drive (vehicle) and broke the glass door of the bank.
“They then attached a rope to the machine before dragging it out of the bank with the four-wheel-drive,” he said.
Police believe the robbers did not have time or enough manpower to load the machine onto the four-wheel drive.
ACP Azizan said the CCTV footage also showed that group fled the scene, leaving the machine in the middle of the road, when passers-by spotted them.
