MALAYSIA - A man cancelled his wedding days before the big day after he told his fiancee that he was robbed of his dowry money.
However, it was all a ruse because he could not afford the dowry, Harian Metro reported.
The fiancee, who only wanted to be known as Noor, said the 24-year-old man sent an SMS informing her he was robbed of RM18,000 (S$7,000), including the RM12,000 dowry after he withdrew the money at a bank.
"I checked with the bank and found that he did not have an account there. I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and went with him to lodge a police report in Batu Pahat.
"He then said that he only lost RM8,000 after I pressured him to tell what had happened," she added.
Noor, 23, said her fiance's action had caused huge embarrassment to her and her family as the wedding was to have been held last Friday and 900 invitation cards had been sent out.
"We had to call off the wedding and hold a prayer session instead. My family was willing to postpone the wedding if he could not afford the dowry," she added.
OCPD Asst Comm Din Ahmad said investigations revealed that the man had not withdrawn any money from the bank and was not robbed.
"We have submitted another report against him for lodging a false report," he added.
