RIP to German footballer Gerd Muller, dead at 75

Any old people here to tell us how did you watch football in 1974 ? Any live telecast in those days ?

On average, a person with Alzheimer's lives four to eight years after diagnosis, but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

Of course! It was a treat to watch football "live" in those days. "Live" telecasts were only reserved for special occasions like World Cup, European cup, FA Cup...etc.

I remember sometimes there were delayed telecasts, especially when the time slots of games clashed.

I was lucky because we had our own tv so we didnt need to go anywhere to watch. I remember when I was little and my dad woke me up to watch the European cup final between liverpool and Borussia moenchengladbach. I think liverpool win 3-1 or something like that. It was really exciting to wake up in the middle of the night to watch a live football match even though it was black and white.

It was 1977 shown on RTM in black n white..

My brother and I persuaded our mother to buy our first TV (Phillips black and white) for the 1970 World Cup.
We stayed awake to watch the 1974 World Cup finals between Germany and Netherlands, live on TV.

RIP

Yes. Thanks for the year bro. Back when footballers like Kevin Keegan, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal, Rainer Bonhof, Berti Vogts... were all the rage.

Donch forget the great Johan Cruyff.....

Yes. He gave football the cruyff turn, which is common now but back then in 1974, it was revolutionary. People have never seen the move before.

They had Guenter Netzer the playmaker, Franz Beckenbauer the Sweeper, Berti Vogts, Paul Breitner , Ulrich Stilieke Gerd Mueller, Uli Hoeness and Juergen Grabowski. IMHO1970 and 1974 German teams produced some of the best players in the world. Still remember Sepp Meier pulling off a double save against Poland.1970 and 1986 were probably the best World Cups in history. Incidentally both were held in Mexico and produced the greatest players of all time-Pele and Diego Maradona.
RIP Mueller.

As a footballer, Maradona was head and shoulders above everyone else. When I was young, I used to think that football is a team game, but after watching him win the World Cup with Argentina, I realise that one man can carry an entire team and win a tournament.

But Lionel Messi failed to win for Argentina.

Every winning team needs an outstanding player to stand out as a leader which is what England is lacking. That's why they failed in every tournament! Even Romania had Hagi, Germany had Matthias, CR7 for Portugal etc.....
Oh yes, 1 English player stands out for me.. Paul Gascoigne!
