BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombian authorities say one person has been killed in rioting over the collapse of pyramid schemes that cost investors millions.
Colombian police director Gen. Oscar Naranjo says agents have seized 66 offices nationwide of businesses involved in alleged illegal lending and confiscated about $6 million.
Naranjo said Thursday there have been no arrests so far. Authorities are investigating whether the companies may have laundered drug money.
Officials say the owner of one of the companies is believed to have fled Colombia. The company's name, in translation, is Fast Money, Easy Cash.
Police say a public official who tried to calm upset investors was shot dead Wednesday night in southern Colombia.
