Embattled PAP newbie candidate Tin Pei Ling may be facing a contest in her maiden election after all after the opposition National Solidarity Party (NSP) declared its interest in Marine Parade GRC.
Speaking to Channel News Asia, NSP president Sebastian Teo revealed that NSP has enough resources and candidates to support a fourth team and is ‘likely’ to contest in Marine Parade, which has not seen a contest since 1992.
The 27 year old Ms Tin has come under heavy criticisms of late from netizens who doubted her ability and competence to become a MP.
Many were upset and even outraged that Ms Tin may enter the parliament via a walkover. An online petition started calling on her to contest in a SMC has garnered more than 4,200 signatures so far. (Sign petition here)
The massive public backlash has unnerved the PAP which may lose more votes elsewhere as a result of the Tin Pei Ling fiasco.
Ms Tin has not made any public statements after being slammed online by Singaporeans while heavyweight PAP ministers have stepped forward to defend her, including Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the latest being Minister in PMO Lim Hwee Hua who tried to turn the tables on her critics by turning it into a ‘gender issue’.
With NSP expected to join the fray, Ms Tin is no longer guaranteed a ‘free ticket’ into parliament. Given the widespread unhappiness and disaffection, the PAP may be in for an uneasy time in Marine Parade GRC.
