Retailer fined RM90,000 for cigarette smuggling
KUALA TERENGGANU: A retailer was fined RM90,000, in default nine months’ jail, by the magistrate’s court here Sunday for smuggling in cigarettes three years ago. Magistrate Wan Nor Aklima Wan Salleh handed down the sentence on Azizi Embong after finding him guilty of transporting the goods, comprising 440 cartons of cigarettes, worth RM8,450, with the use of a van. Azizi, 28, of Pulau Duyong, was charged with committing the offence in front of SM Tengku Mizan, Jalan Bukit Cempaka-Batu Rakit here at 6pm on June 21, 2007.
He was charged under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling the cigarettes and was liable for the first offence to a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods and of not more than 20 times the value of the goods, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both. Azizi was represented by lawyer Wan Zainuddin Wan Musa, while prosecuting officer Koh Joo Kai prosecuted. -- Bernama
