- Spreads faster than Omicron.
- While also causing greater damage.
- potentially causes more serious illness than earlier strains
- appeared capable of dodging immunity offered by Covid vaccines
- BA.2 has replaced Omicron as the dominant strain in Denmark
- the BA.2 descendant lineage, which differs from BA.1 in some of the mutations, including in the spike protein, is increasing in many countries”.
- Study out of Denmark found in late January that BA.2 was “associated with an increased susceptibility of infection for unvaccinated individuals, fully vaccinated individuals and booster-vaccinated individuals, compared to BA.1”.
- While the findings have not yet been peer reviewed, they suggest the risk of the sub-variant BA.2 for global health is “potentially higher” than that of the original Omicron strain.
- New lab experiments from Japan show that BA.2 may have features that make it as capable of causing serious illness as older variants of Covid-19, including Delta.
