An Indonesian Muslim cleric who allegedly married a 12-year-old girl and plans to wed another aged 7 and one aged 9, is under investigation for the possible violation of child protection and marriage laws, police said Monday.
Pujiono Cahyo Widianto told reporters he married his young bride before thousands of people at a ceremony in Central Java province in August, according to news Web site detik.com.
The 43-year-old also said he hoped to marry two other girls, aged 7 and 9, the report said.
The cleric's alleged wedding and future marriage plans prompted complaints from the Indonesian Ulema Council _ the country's most senior clerics _ and the government's Child Protection Commission, which called for a police investigation, the report said.
Widianto insisted he would wait until his new wife reached puberty before having sex with her, the report said.
Purity, guaranteed virgin.
