Singapore - A Singapore triad boss hacked to death by suspected rival gang members was cremated Thursday after about a 1,000 mourners paid their last respects under heavy police surveillance, reports said.

Lee Con-You was ambushed in a pre-dawn attack earlier this month after parking his Mercedes-Benz outside the five-star Shangri-La hotel in Singapore's Geylang district, according to police and media reports.

On the lookout for triad kingpins at Lee's funeral Wednesday, police set up road blocks in the area, checked mourners' identities and videotaped proceedings, the Standard reported.

Visitors at the Buddhist ceremony were also scanned by security guards hired by Lee's family, the newspaper added. An army of 50 near life-size paper figures representing male and female virgin attendants to serve Lee in his afterlife were on display at the vigil.

In keeping with the Chinese tradition of burning paper symbols of wealth for the dead, there were also models of a Ferrari, a Mercedes, a yacht, a six-floor mansion and a jet plane, the Apple Daily reported.

Police monitored Lee's cremation Thursday too, the Standard said.

There have been no arrests so far in connection with the murder of the 41-year-old gangster, known as the 'Baron of Geylang East', an area of Geylang regarded as lucrative because of its nightclubs, saunas and hostess bars.

However, police suspect it involved a long-running feud between Lee's MIW group and the Wayang gang, the States Times reported.

Lee's Mercedes was hit by a car before he was attacked by three knife-men who then fled, according to the police. Two burnt-out cars believed to be linked to the killing were found a few hours later.
