Red Bull gives you.... increased risk of heart disease, say scientists

Just one can of Red Bull could raise the risk of heart attack or stroke, even in young people, researchers have warned.

A study of university students found drinking one 250ml can of the sugar-free version of the energy drink that 'gives you wings' increased the 'stickiness' of the blood and raised the risk of life-threatening clots.

Researcher Dr Scott Willoughby said: 'One hour after they drank Red Bull, (their blood systems) were no longer normal.

'They were abnormal like we would expect in a patient with cardiovascular disease.

'If you get an increase in stickiness and a decreased ability of the blood vessels to stop its stickiness, that adds up to a bad situation.

'If you add in other risk factors for cardiovascular disease - stress or high blood pressure - this could be potentially deadly.'

Dr Willoughby, of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, said he was 'alarmed' at the results and would not drink Red Bull himself.

Those with underlying heart or circulatory problems should think twice before buying the caffeine-loaded drink, he said.

The results, reported in the Australian newspaper, also shocked the students taking part, some of whom drank up to eight cans a night to help them stay awake to study. Many now refuse to drink Red Bull again.

Red Bull is banned in Norway, Uruguay and Denmark because of health fears, but the company last year sold 3.5 billion cans and bottles in 143 countries.

In Britain alone, it has sales of £271 million a year, with much of the cash spent in bars and clubs were it is a popular mixer with vodka and other spirits.

Previous studies have warned the stimulant effect of Red Bull can mask some of the tell-tale signs of drunkenness - putting revellers at risk of injury and attack because they do not realise how intoxicated they are.

Dr Willoughby said drinking Red Bull caused the blood 'to become sticky'

The Australian researchers said that two of the drink's ingredients - caffeine and the amino acid taurine - may have dangerous consequences for the heart when taken together.

Dr Willoughby said: 'Caffeine and taurine - both of these individually point towards being beneficial but maybe there's something quirky about the effect of the combination of the two that is causing this reaction, that is what we need to look at next.'

Formulated by the marketing director of an Austrian toothpaste company in the 1980s, one can contains 80 mg of caffeine, around the same as a cup of filter coffee, or two cups of instant.

However, cans do carry health warnings advising people not to drink more than two a day.

Red Bull Australia spokeswoman Linda Rychter said: 'The study does not show effects which would go beyond drinking a normal cup of coffee.

She added that Red Bull's global sales were testament to health authorities across the world concluding it was safe to drink.

But Dr Willougby said: 'If you have any predisposition to cardiovascular disease, I'd think twice about drinking it.'

I only know that it's a very addictive liquid.

I think the Thais and Europeans drink this for different reasons and also difference in the way its drank. Thais drink this specifically to wake themselves up and have energy for work. This is particularly popular with the labourers and drivers. I think Europeans drink this more for pleasure, taste and as a mixer or party drink.

A UK friend once told me he has a party at home with some friends. His 75 years old dad came to his house and hung around. Then he saw those small blue cans of RedBull and drank a can followed by another 3 cans. After he went home he couldn't sleep. In fact he could not sleep for 4 days and my friend and family had to bring him to the hospital to have his system flushed. All in all he did not sleep for 6 nights and during those time he had heart palpitations and the family were afraid that he might get a heart attack.

Thai Gf intro me to drink mix with beer....after that stamina geng geng.

When I lived in Thailand, I use tea as mixer for my whisky when drinking at home, or to put it in the other way, I lace my tea with whisky. It tastes good for casual sipping like after meal or when watching TV. It's an idea I got from Irish coffee, i.e. coffee laced with whisky. In pubs and clubs, no thanks no mixer please, I always have it neat or on the rocks. Pub and club mixers are always soft drinks. I don't think that's healthy and anyway, they overprice soft drinks as mixers.

This article with regards to red bull, does it apply to other energy drinks as well? surely the effect will be the same for other drinks as they all use the same ingredients. I have an energy drink before work out or a heavy day at work,,,not for at home and sitting around. Might try the beer and red bull mix for extra stamina with gf,,heheheheh

Thierry Henry

"They are our sponsors"

Are you an Arsenal fan ? I like Henry, this guy is tall and fast. I like his cheeky back kick and the ball went right through in between the legs and score a goal. Like one of those days in school. Fantastic !

Re: Thierry Henry

Btw i prefer the blue/silver cans to the yellow colored ones. The blue/silver cans have that special gassy taste in them that make them taste really good the yellow ones don't have it and it tastes like sugar flavored water.

Re: Thierry Henry

I remember this one time, when I was still in the Army, I drank 6 cans in one afternoon as a bet. If I remember correctly, that was during field camp in Thailand. I didn't fall sick afterwards. And since we weren't supposed to sleep well during field exercises anyway, I don't know if the Red Bulls (the Thai brand) had any significant effect on me.

Never a fan of football clubs but admiration of players for their skills. For example i am no fan of Barca who are Europe best for now but i support Real Madrid because many of my favorite star players are there.

You see David Luiz, Suarez, Drogba in this forum but i am no fan of Liverfool or Chelsea.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Your avatar looks like a blue Pacman. That was quite unique. It's big and simple.

I still miss that blue Pepsi that smelled and tasted like swimming pool water. That was also unique.

Re: I Miss My Blue Pepsi

red bull has lots of caffine so it constricts your blood vessels too.

My fat burner lipo 6 has 100mg of caffine in 1 capsule and you're suppose to either take 2 or 4 daily so i consume about 400mg of caffine.
