3,835 applicants in 2012 highest ever.

According to new data from the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), a central service for higher education admissions, 3,835 people from Singapore applied to UK universities and colleges in 2012, up from 3,339 in 2011, 2,884 in 2010, and 2,494 in 2009.

UCAS manages the website www.ucas.com, and guides students through the process and use the online application system used in many of the UK universities and colleges.

UCAS adviser Peter Evans who is leading the UCAS International team in the British Council's Education UK exhibition in Singapore this weekend, said: “Interest in UK higher education continues to grow among Singaporean students, and we’re delighted to be back."

“By coming to Singapore, UCAS can give all those potential applicants access to the support and advice they need about the process. I’m really excited to be here.”

Sophie Cannon, Marketing and Communications Manager for the British Council, said: “UK education is all about helping students to reach their true potential, develop their skills and prepare for a career.

“From our surveys, we know that students have a great time in the UK. It’s a friendly place that welcomes students from all religions, cultures and nations. Most universities have lively Student Unions, where you can make friends, join clubs and try out new hobbies.”

Evans further announced that he will be answering students’ questions on the UK’s higher education application process on Sunday 24 March at the Marriott Hotel, 320 Orchard Road, Singapore, and will also be visiting a number of local schools throughout the week.

ya, me think so too...shld go US. in UK, you want to work part time also got problem, in US, you can make full use of your student visa to work part time there. me an ex UKer, i know it's quite boring in UK, the weather sucks. only thing good is the scenaries and castles that is quite enchanting. besides, i think UK is more dangerous than US. you have to carry knife with you at night if you want to go out in the streets in Manchester. that's why i say sinkies are always sinkies, not much brain in their selection of good location to read their degrees. and furthermore, in UK, you are train to mug books and not be creative in your thoughts.

Y go to Pommieland? Go to yankeeland better right?

Sterling is weak. Mummy and Daddy can finance their kids tuition fees much more easily.
The UK also has some of the best universities. Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, Imperial etc...
Sinkies always want the best.

The top 100 US universities also better than those UK ones named above.... With the exception of Oxbridge.

Just compare the number of research papers published.

Most are scholarship candidates. You also cannot have the children of the elites mixing with the hoi polloi. Also to better compete with FTs.

Besides the reputation of UK unis, given the relative strength of the S$ against the £. Its a smart choice to study in UK.
and europe is at your feet, good luck to them :D

Uh USD also low what,,,but USA got many places which are cheaper than Pommieland.Unless those that want to study there want to go Europe whereby its easier to move around. However as UK student visa requirements is less stringent. Many Ah Tiongs go there and study,,,soo much till the lecturers are complaining that there is lack of diversity in the class.

Studying in UK is expensive. The Brits believe that a foreign student should pay more to subsidise a local student. That's why I chose Canada where the education is cheap & good. While I was a student I met many Sporeans & Chinese scholars who were sponsored by their gov'ts. If it's good enough for gov't scholars than it is certainly good enough for me:)

Studying at UK universities is still considered the best option for someone looking to acquire a basic degree. But if you are talking about Masters or PhD programmes then of course the United States is the best place to be. For example, if one wishes to study for a PhD in Economics and to be with the best, then should consider Chicago, Harvard or MIT because all the rest are now regarded as being well off the chase ....

hullo, scrooby, you are wanted... your friend jeewee looking high and low for you...lol...:p:D

not really...also, even you graduate, you are unlikely to find jobs in UK. i can guarantee that.

and if you come back to s'pore, look at the investments made by UK and US, you will know that with a US degree, you are more advantageous than those from UK. besides, if you graduate in US, you stand a higher chance of getting employed in US and eventually a green card. my army pal, a singh, graduated from cornell and now a high flyer in one of the US highly acclaimed firm.

Yes. US will be a gd choice. However de choice of uni is impt if u 1 2 find a job der. Cornell is a gd uni, I think amng de top 20 in de world (correct me if Im X here). And Ders no reason 4 u 2 cum back 2 Spore wen uv finished ur studies in de US. U can find a job 7 apply 4 green card & citizenship der.

that is but of course, you need to be in good university, at least above average, to get hired. :o

30% cheaper nowadays given the current exchange rate.

Imo, country and university does not really matter. It's up to the individual students. Does it mean a grad from Cambridge is 100% 'better' than one from Warwick? That a grad from Harvard is 'smarter' than one from Dakota?

I mentioned Harvard and Cambridge. Worked with/for these chaps in the SPF. No big deal. They can be very ordinary.

U of A? U of T? UBC? McGill?
