SINGAPORE: Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said the economic crisis will have an adverse impact on the real economies of countries in the region. But he added that Singapore will ride out the crisis and emerge stronger.
Speaking at an awards ceremony on Friday morning, he said a capable Singapore Armed Forces has provided the foundation for Singapore's security, stability and progress.
But with the current recession, Mr Teo said Singaporeans must be mindful that new social and political stresses could surface in the region.
Mr Teo said: "Such stresses can translate into uncertainties that affect the security environment in our region. Our continued steady investment in a strong and capable SAF allows us to face any such security uncertainties that may arise from this crisis with sure-footed confidence." - CNA
