On 5 February 2009, the Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao published a full page editorial carrying veiled threats from a police inspector to arrest netizens spreading baseless and unfounded rumors about Yio Chu Kang MP Seng Han Thong who was torched by a disgruntled ex-cabby last month.
Pay close attention to the words enclosed within the red boxes.
The first is about an interview with police inspector Huang Hong Guan who openly threatened netizens who spread false malicious rumors on the internet with criminal prosecution.
The second claims that some netizens have been MAKING UP STORIES about the real reason behind the fire attack on Seng Han Thong being the old man was frustrated that his flat was repossessed by HDB and the MP has done little to help him.
Taken together, we can conclude that the police will consider charging netizens for spreading this untrue story about the real reason behind the fire attack on MP Seng.
On the evening of the incident on 11 January 2009, a few threads were started in fuckwarezone and Sammyboy forums alleging that the old man set fire upon Mr Seng because he did not assist him in preventing HDB from repossessing his flat. These threads had since been deleted.
We now know that the old man was angry with Mr Seng for not giving him an “ang bao” during the community event as the real motive behind his attack. So how did this fairy tale come about ?
