A TAXI driver, who allegedly kidnapped a 10-year-old girl and her seven-year-old brother, raped her and then drowned the children in a canal in India, was shot dead by police on Tuesday, according to Tamil Nesan. Authorities said Mohana Krishnan, 23, was shot dead in Coimbatore after he tried to escape, seriously injuring two policemen.
Coimbatore city police commissioner C. Sylendra Babu said Mohana, who was not handcuffed while being taken to the scene of crime in a police van, suddenly snatched a revolver from a policeman and demanded that they drive him to Palakkad in Kerala. He then opened fire, injuring two inspectors before being gunned down.
Residents welcomed Mohana's death by letting off firecrackers and distributing sweets, adding they felt like celebrating Deepavali again.
