KOTA KINABALU: A New Year celebration spent drinking tapai (local rice wine) resulted in a 16-year-old girl being raped by an acquaintance at her home in Keningau, while her family were sleeping off the effects.
The incident was recorded on a cell phone by a 13-year-old friend of the suspect.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Zahari Mohamed said the 19-year-old suspect had been drinking with the victim and her family at their home in Kampung Linsosod when the family passed out drunk, one by one, about midnight.
"The suspect then took advantage of the situation to rape the girl while the 13-year-old recorded the incident on his handphone.
"The image was fuzzy because it took place in the dark but you can make out the images," Zahari said.
Police arrested the suspect after a police report was lodged by the victim's family and the suspect admitted committing the offence.
Both the suspect and his friend are currently under a four day remand beginning Jan 2. Both are expected to be charged soon.
