Two seniors held for raping aspiring actress
Vijay V Singh, TNN, Feb 17, 2010, 01.43am IST
MUMBAI: The Oshiwara police on Tuesday arrested two aged men, a businessman and his friend, who allegedly raped a 25-year-old aspiring actress after promising her work in films last year. The accused were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody till February 19.
“The woman claimed that she was trying her luck in TV serials when she met the businessman who promised to help her find a role in movies as well as a flat to stay and allegedly raped her,’’ a police official said. “However, the woman claimed that the businessman had fitted a video camera in the room where they had an intercourse for the first time. When the victim later reminded the businessman about his promises, he warned her against filing a police complaint and threatened to make public a copy of the clipping,’’ the official added.
However, the accused refuting the police claims stated that it was consensual sex and the clipping was, in fact, recorded by the victim. “He claimed that she was allegedly blackmailing him and threatening to expose his act,’’ a source said. “According to the accused, the victim and an Oshiwara police officer had allegedly demanded money and a flat from him,’’ the source added.
Advocate Pradeep Shetty, representing the accused, said, “The duo had complained against the police officer and the woman with the anti-corruption bureau and crime branch. Following this, the police booked them in the case. The name of the businessman’s friend has been included in the case just because he had helped him to file a complaint against the police officer’’.
The police officer admitted that officials had registered the FIR without conducting a detailed inquiry. A senior officer stated that it was a sensitive case so they decided to first register the FIR and then conduct an inquiry. Zonal deputy commissioner of police K M M Prasanna said, “The woman said that the first time the accused raped her. We have registered an offence and are investigating.’’
“According to the accused, the victim recently visited the businessman’s residence, fought with him and asked him to fulfill his promise. The businessman then called his friend and they reported the matter to the Oshiwara police station,’’ another officer said.
