SINGAPORE : A 29-year-old Bangladeshi was fined S$4,000 on Wednesday for abusing the Tourist Tax Refund Scheme.
Md Latif, a computer salesman, had claimed S$431.68 Goods and Services Tax refunds for five laptop computers.
A statement from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore and Singapore Customs said he had approached the GST Refund Counter at Changi Airport Terminal 2 together with a Bangladeshi tourist on November 5. They made a tourist tax refund claim under the tourist's name.
However, Md Latif was later found loitering in the airport's Departure Hall with four of the computers. Under the GST Tourist Refund Scheme regulations, the computers should have been taken out of Singapore by the tourist.
Md Latif was arrested and charged in court for receiving goods from a tourist after the tourist tax refund form had been endorsed by the Singapore Customs.
Under the GST Act, offenders could be fined up to S$5,000 or in default jailed up to six months
