A powerful earthquake struck deep under the sea in eastern Indonesia late Saturday, causing panic and sending residents running out of their homes, officials and witnesses said.
Separately at around 10 a.m. in Sukabumi, West Java, some residents felt a tremor which officials at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said measured 5.1 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was said to be 85 kilometers west of Sukabumi with a depth of 20 kilometers, Antara reported. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from both quakes.
Sukabumi is a city surrounded by the regency of the same name in the highlands of West Java, Indonesia, about 80 km (50 miles) south of the national capital, Jakarta.
The quake in eastern Inonesia had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, but at a depth of 138 kilometers was too far below the earth's surface to cause a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said as quoted by the AP.
The US Geological Survey says Saturday's quake - the second strong temblor in two days - was located 365 kilometers southeast of Ambon in the Maluku islands in the Banda Sea. People ran to higher ground fearing a tsunami, said Ian Kotualubun of the BMG in Saumlaki, the area closest to the epicenter. - JP
