JAKARTA—A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Wednesday, triggering a minor tsunami and widespread panic across the same area that was hit by giant waves in 2004 and left more than 200,000 people dead.

Residents waited for a ride to higher ground in the back of a truck in Banda Aceh before dawn Wednesday.
The predawn temblor Wednesday caused some damage and injuries, but no deaths were immediately reported. A tsunami watch was issued, but then lifted, by monitoring agencies in Hawaii, Indonesia and Thailand.
Farid Ahmad Saleh, a spokesman for the local police in Aceh province, in the northern part of Sumatra, said the damage wasn't severe. "Only roofs fell, but no building collapsed. There was only minor damage," Mr. Farid told elShinta radio.
The quake was centered around 125 miles west-northwest of Sibolga in northern Sumatra, the United States Geological Survey said.
