Q: Temasek net gain of $56B means what?

-does it mean real profit of $56b?
-how does the recent selling of all our powerstations, spc etc affected this?
-and how much profit from glc vs overseas? ie if tomorrow all glc increase price x2 does it mean profit becomes $100b?

but most troubling is
tharman again wash hand saying everything is up to temasek board to decide. but he say it's assets is the coutries.

so is tharman saying the temasek board (which the people did not vote for) can play with people's money but no need answer to anyone including tharman (which at least some people voted for)?

That's right. First the GLCs are making ton of $$$ in a no competition own local turf. But when venture abroad, all fumbled big time. Shin Corp, ABC Learning, Merill Lych, and now CCB.

One of the factor Temasek is able to make $$$ so steady in early days was because govt policies sure sided her. But when move abroad, she got no "big daddy" to take care of her. Still remember David En, NOL CEO? He as a CEO was staying home reading book while his competitors are dining, drinking or entertaining the China chiefs. Why got chance to tie deals then.

Gain in portfolio does not mean net profit.
Tharm is bullshitting everyone. gain in portfolio is a meaningless stat. More appropriate would be net profit, balance sheet, income statements over at least a 3 year period.
The PAP pumps money into Temasek every year thru its GLCs, MOF, etc. using this money, and also using borrowed money thru bond issues, Temasek buys companies. This companies are added to their portfolios, and obviously over 6 years, the portfolio should increase. Just because the portfolio increased by $56 billion does not mean anything. For all we know, they pumped $100 billion into Temasek the last 6 years, and if it grew by $56 billion, that means, they lost $44 billion. So, this stat is useless.
