Russia threatens to retaliate against US trade war: bans sales of aerospace engines

[Global Network Military Report] "Russia can consider limiting the supply of rocket engines to the United States that they cannot do without, in order to counteract the US tariff increase on Russian steel." The Russian State News Agency reported on the 3rd that experts from the Russian Institute of Strategic Investigation said that As the United States raises tariffs on Russian steel, Russia should take countermeasures like China. In addition to limiting the titanium alloys required for exporting to the United States, the Russian side can also restrict the supply of Russian rocket engines to the United States. Russian experts believe that this move will cause a major blow to the US aerospace industry.

Russia’s “Parliament News” reported that in 1997, Russia’s research and production consortium for power machinery signed a cooperation agreement with the United States, requiring that a total of 101 RD-180 rocket engines be delivered to the United States before the end of 2018 for use as US “Astronomy-5” Rocket first-class engine. The "Astronomy-5" rocket bears the mission of launching an important US satellite and is one of the main US carrier rockets. In 2014, the U.S. private company, Orbital Science Corp., and the Russia Power Machinery Research and Production Consortium signed a one-billion-dollar contract again and plans to purchase 60 RD-181 rocket engines from Russia.

Regarding the extent to which the United States depends on Russian rocket engines, in January this year, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Rogozin said that Russia has been selling RD-180 rocket engines to the United States, and the order will be valid until 2020. The price of rocket motors manufactured by the United States itself is twice that of Russian products, and its reliability still needs to be verified. Last December, after US President Trump announced the resumption of the moon plan, Russian member Pashkov questioned how Americans landed on the moon. He said on Twitter: "Returning to the moon? Great. But how do Americans don't rocket engines there? Know that they don't even have our engines and they can't even reach the International Space Station." Expert of Russia's "Aerospace News" magazine Fanashyev said that abandoning the RD-180 rocket engine will cause a heavy blow to the American aviation industry, especially the launch of the US military satellite. Within a few years the United States could not find a replacement for the RD-180.

In fact, the United States has always wanted to get rid of its dependence on Russian rocket engines. The "Wall Street Journal" once reported that since the time required by the United States to develop and apply domestically produced engines exceeded expectations, it may be necessary to purchase rocket engines from Russia by 2028. According to reports, at present, the United States is facing great difficulties in developing new BE-4 rocket engines. Despite spending huge sums of money, R&D work is not smooth. ▲ (Liu Yupeng)
