(Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday he would reverse the collapse of the Soviet Union if he had a chance to alter modern Russian history, news agencies reported.

Putin made the comments, likely to strike a chord with millions of nostalgic older Russians, weeks before a March 18 election that polls show he should win comfortably.

Fielding quick-fire questions from supporters in Russia's European exclave of Kaliningrad, Putin was asked what Russian historical event he would like to change.

"The collapse of the Soviet Union," Putin immediately shot back.

Putin, who served in the KGB in the Soviet era, called the 1991 Soviet fall the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe" of the twentieth century in a 2005 speech and has used the Soviet Union's World War Two defeat of Nazi Germany to stir patriotism and help create a new sense of Russian identity.

In answer to another question on Friday, Russian news agencies reported that Putin had said he would still want to live in the here and now if he could choose what period of history to live in.

"You see in previous periods all my ancestors were serfs and I'm the president," agencies cited Putin as saying.

A day after unveiling dramatic new weapons — including a nuclear-powered cruise missile — that sparked talk of a return to Cold War tensions, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested he would reverse the collapse of the Soviet Union if he could.

Mr. Putin’s comments on the 1991 collapse of the USSR — which bound Russia and many of its neighbors, while exerting influence in Eastern Europe and abroad for almost seven decades — came at a question-and-answer forum held Friday in Kaliningrad.

The Russian leader was asked what event in his nation’s history he would have liked to change.

“The collapse of the Soviet Union,” Mr. Putin responded, according to the Russian news agency Tass.

Regret about the collapse of the Soviet Union is not unusual in Russia.

Executive held in killing

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — The Honduran police have arrested a high-ranking executive with a hydroelectric company in connection with the 2016 killing of an activist who led a decade-long fight against a dam project, saying that he had helped to plan the crime.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would reverse the collapse of the Soviet Union if he had a chance to change Russian history, Russian news agencies reported.

Putin's remark rueing the loss of the Soviet empire on March 2 came one day after he asserted in an annual address that Russia has an arsenal of nuclear-capable weapons that no foe can defeat, in comments that raised concern about a new arms race like that between the Soviet Union and the West during the Cold War.

It was not the first time that Putin, who served in the Soviet-era spy agency the KGB, expressed regret over the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. In 2005, he called it the "greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century."

Putin's nostalgia about the Soviet system weeks before a March 18 presidential election he is expected to easily win are likely to be welcomed by millions of older Russians who also view the Soviet years nostalgically.

Taking questions from supporters in Russia's European exclave of Kaliningrad on March 2, Putin was asked what Russian historical event he would like to change.

"The collapse of the Soviet Union," Putin immediately said.

But in answer to another question -- if he could choose what period of history to live in -- Putin said he prefers to live in the present day, Russian news agencies reported.

"You see, all my ancestors in the past were peasant serfs, while I am the president," Russian state-run news agency TASS quoted Putin as saying.

Ukraine is closing all kindergartens, schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions to prevent an energy crisis in connection with Russian gas giant Gazprom's refusal to supply natural gas to Ukraine as of March 1, 2018.
"Under a [Cabinet] order, starting from today, it was recommended or rather instructed to completely suspend work at kindergartens, schools and higher educational institutions until March 6 inclusively," Ukrainian Energy and Coal Minister Ihor Nasalyk announced in parliament on Friday, March 2.

It is also recommended to review the temperature regime at these institutions so that it could be within the minimum acceptable standards.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers on Friday, March 2, enacted its energy crisis response action plan and instructed power generating companies to switch from natural gas to boiler oil.

The action plan, which has been introduced due to Russian gas giant Gazprom's refusal to supply gas to Ukraine as of March 1, 2018, will be in effect for five days so far.
