Putin boasts new jet fighter better than U.S. plane

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin climbed into the cockpit of Russia's newest fighter jet on Thursday and said it would trump a U.S.-built rival, the F-22 Raptor.

India is Russia’s sole partner in the development project and is likely to acquire a twin-seat version of the fighter for its Air Force. The prototype is a single-pilot aircraft.

Putin watched a test flight of a "fifth-generation" stealth fighter, dubbed the T-50 and billed as Russia's first all-new warplane since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

"This machine will be superior to our main competitor, the F-22, in terms of maneuverability, weaponry and range," Putin told the pilot after the flight, according to an account on the government website.

Putin said the plane would cost up to three times less than similar aircraft in the West and could remain in service for 30 to 35 years with upgrades, according to the report.

Successful development of the fighter, built by Sukhoi, is crucial to showing Russia can challenge U.S. technology and modernize its military after a period of post-Soviet decay.

Russia also plans to manufacture T-50s jointly with India.

The F-22 raptor stealth fighter first flew in 1997 and is the only fifth-generation fighter in service. Fifth-generation aircraft have advanced flight and weapons control systems and can cruise at supersonic speeds.

According to the government website, the test pilot told Putin the controls of the T-50 allowed the pilot to operate most of the plane's systems without taking his hands off the joystick, which he said would be very useful under high forces of gravity.

"I know, I've flown," Putin replied. Sukhoi has said the plane should be ready for use in 2015.

Other possible loads include one 1500 kg bomb per weapons bay or two 400 km+ range anti-AWACS weapons on external hard-points. A maximum weapons load of 7500 kg is reported.

Confusing that India uses US Nuclear Energy technology
and Russian Weaponry..

Any reasons?

For me, I think there are 2 reasons:

1. Acted as a spy for USA to steal and see what Russia technology is up to.

2. The Indians they will buy anything that is cheap, regardless of the plane quality even that plane mulfunction and can cost a live of someone.

So dont you think they are a double headed snake? As a saying goes:" If you had a gun and you see a cobra and Indian on the road, who do you kill first?"

Very True

India is actually very pro-US
Russia is too stupid to equip them with their best technology.

I can see that Russia is desperate for $$$$

Russia is over flooded with US dollars due to its oil exports.
It is now the world's largest producer if oil , overtaking Saudi Arabia.

Hence, Russia is not desperate for dollars at all.

Secondly, Russia has a long standing close military relationship and co-operation with India going back over 40 odd years.

Take a look at the PAP, the missiles they bought from the US is stored in the US & software locked. Must ask the US president permission if they want to use .

Compare this to India which doesn't want to become too dependant on any one country.

india have no need for expensive technology gadgets. Looking at her neighbours u can see all armed with low tech weaponery. All india have to do is overwhelm them with manpower. The cost of human life is low in india, it even a good way to cull the population.
The only strong neighbour india have is china, the terrains on the borders share by two giant countries are mountainous, so all those fancy MBTs and IFVs are taken out of equation, so the fight will have to slug it out by mountain troops with light weapons and pack 75mm gun or mortar. All are cheap cheap weapons.
Comrade Stalin once said, quantity itself is also a quality.

Putin, its called HOTAS u idiot. Most 3rd gen fighters had it already, only your Russian 5th gen fighter is now using it? That's primitive.

That is not true. India has a history of buying top shelf equipment. They bought Mirage 2000s when they were one of the top fighter a/c at that time, as well as Sepecat Jaguars when they were one of the top ground attack ac at the time. Mig-21 may be cheap but inthe hands of a good pilot is very effective. The USAF will tell you that, and the IDF has a healthy respect for this plane too.

Yeah in your dreams. Ask yourself how these pack mountain guns, mortars, ammo etc. are going to get up to this high altitudes? U need special helos for the high altitude ops. U need UAV and Armed UAVs for the recce, targetting, etc. U need fighters with PGMs and TOWS/Hellfires to use against the other side. Hardly a low tech war if you ask me.

The operative word used in the report suggest " High forces of gravity"

The average 3rd Gen fighters do not risk more than 7G.
Eg: F16. although rated for 9G, stays within the 7G envelope.

This Sukhoi a/ pulls 11 G.

However it is not made clear which pilot can handle 11G - in any aircraft.

Is it just me or does that look very similar to the F22 Raptor? Damn it looks like a carbon copy.

Look 80% same.
Look at the tail/jet nozzle and air intake look at lot different. And also main 2 side wing.

Once the objective is for a stealth aircraft with high performance characteristics, then the aerodynamic designs invariably follow a similar geometric profile, no matter which manufacturer build it.

example: A Boeing 737 and a Airbus 320 look almost similar.

It is one thing to have similar appearance.

But making a high performance aircraft with advance materials and composites, avionics - these are not that easy to copy. They need advanced skill and expertise. Real advanced knowledge and expertise in material science, aerodynamics, avionics, engine designs, guidance technology etc.

Similarity in appearance is one thing. !!

copycat
and piece of junk,
waste of aircraft bunker space.

Probably a good fighter on paper but hopeless due to poor execution.

You need an entire mfg base to produce a reliable aircraft. The Russian can't even produce a decent automobile.

You need both the design as well as production capability.

" Probably " ?

Russian aviation industry has one of the best design, innovation and broad based manufacturing credentials in the world. In some areas they even surpass the Western aviation industries.

Read US Aviation and Space technology magazine articles to verify this.
