Diva .Put sex myths to bed (part 1)

Fact or fiction? We yank the covers off bedroom falsehoods so that you can have smarter, more liberated sex! Here are 12 sex myths debunked.

1. You can't get pregnant during your period - FALSE!

There is a chance that you can get pregnant during a period, especially towards the tail-end of your menstrual cycle. There are a couple of reasons for this. While having a period means breaking down of the lining and "washing away", it is possible that the unfertilised egg is still in the uterus and conception can occur if you have sex when you think you are finishing your period.

Ovulation, the process in which a woman's ovaries release an egg, takes place 14 days before the end of your cycle. But when you experience a very short cycle, it is possible that you will ovulate while you are still menstruating. If you have sex before, or during your period, then there can be a chance of pregnancy.

Sometimes women who are ovulating can experience vaginal spotting due to stress or hormonal changes, and that can be mistaken for a period. As you are most fertile just after ovulation, you are more likely to get pregnant at this time than any other in your cycle.

Typically, sperm survives for two to three days in a woman's body. But under "optimum" conditions, sperm can stay "active" for up to five days and still be able to fertilise an egg during this time. So if you've had unprotected sex before or after ovulation, it's best you run a pregnancy test.

2.You can't get pregnant if the man pulls out before he ejaculates - FALSE!

It is possible for sperm to come out at anytime during sex. Men release small amount of fluid before ejaculation, commonly known as the "pre-cum", which can contain sperm. Men also cannot exactly tell when the pre-ejaculate is released. Besides, it is easy for your partner to get carried away in the heat of the moment.

3. You can't get pregnant if you shower or douche right after sex - FALSE!

It only takes a second for the sperm to travel to the cervix, The Times of India reported. By the time you will take a hit the shower, the sperm would have had all time to fertilise the egg.

4. You can't get pregnant while having sex standing up, or in the shower - FALSE!

If you have unprotected sex you can get pregnant, no matter how or where you do it.

5. Condoms are 100% safe - FALSE!

Condoms are a highly effective form of contraception, as well as a great way of preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). But there is always the chance that condoms can and do break, so it is always a smart move to use them in conjunction with other forms of contraception such as the pill.

6. You can't get pregnant while on the pill - FALSE!

The chances of getting pregnant while taking the birth control pill are close to zero as a standard pill is said to be about 99.5% effective - if you follow all the instructions scrupulously. But according to The Times of India, if you miss pills, are on antibiotics, or have flu and diarrhoea, you need to use condoms for the next seven days.

7. Peeing after sex washes out sperm and prevents pregnancy - FALSE!

Peeing is peeing. Your urine exists from the urethra and not the vaginal opening. You cannot flush sperm out by peeing.

8. Men want sex more than women do - FALSE!

Women want sex as much as men - but they are guided by other emotions as well. A combination of pressures and exhaustion from work and taking care of the household are good enough reasons to go off sex completely by the end of the day.

Hormonal changes and mood swings also make them feel more desirable some days than others, so they are likely to have a higher in sex drive during certain points of the month, rather than crave for sex perpetually.

And like it or not, most women like men to initiate. They are unlikely to beg for sex.

Put sex myths to bed (part 3)

Fact or fiction? We yank the covers off bedroom falsehoods so that you can have smarter, more liberated sex! Here are 12 sex myths debunked.

...Continued from Part 2.
Pigs will fly if a couple, who has been married for half a lifetime, is still having crazy-horse sex every night. All of us have different standards of what makes terrific sex, so it is something very subjective. But of course, it helps if partners have a strong relationship going - that way, the experience of making love will always be sweeter.

10. Men are more promiscuous than women - TRUE!

This is most likely true because it is in nature's way that men have the ability and are governed by the need to procreate. But men's indiscriminate behaviour probably happens by much less than you think. The Times of India stated that in a poll about each gender's sex lives, men overestimate while women underestimate, due to societal pressures.

The level of promiscuity also depends on how attractive the people in question are. An attractive, sexually liberated woman is likely to have had more partners than a not-so-fab-looking guy around the same age, reported the Indian publication.

11. Women don't like porn or dirty sex - FALSE!

According to the Times of India, women love porn. UK tabloid, The Sun, also reported that 66% of women surveyed watch porn.

X-rated films give women new ideas and tricks to experiment with to make their partners happy. Online magazine, Oprah.com stated in an article: "With porn, women get to experiment with making adult choices and trying on new fantasy ideas, just as we might try a different brand of condom for a change."

But The Sun reported that women in relationships, disliked porn when they caught their partners watching explicit programmes.

12. Men always want sex - FALSE!

Give your partner more credit than that. But if he is 18 and has landed his first girlfriend, then perhaps it is true.

Otherwise, as men get older, fact is, there is more to life than sex. The Times of India stated the example that responsibilities from work and daily pressures of bills can weigh a man down and sex is not on his mind all the time. But it is also true that men are ready to jump into bed the minute they are turned on.
