Purpose Of Government

In your opinion, what is the ultimate purpose of government?
Please try not to be vague, or abstract, or sound grand, or bombastic, or quote what the pappies would say, or be too idealistic.
Some would say "Manage the country and its resources", or "Improve the economic conditions of the country", or "Make the country as rich as possible" etc.
But shouldn't it be to "Ensure that every single citizen born on the shores is able to lead a decent life"?

The purpose of Government is clearly explained in this video (about 9min into the video). It's about 28mins long, but you will understand what freedom really means and what role government play in terms of freedom of the people. The more role the government has, the less freedom people will have.

you should first define "decent life" - what's decent to me might be indecent to you

the role of government in a capitalist state is to:
1. regulate industry
2. create jobs by enabling the free markets
3. redistribute wealth tru out society via taxes and social programs
4. ensure public goods and services are accessible by those who need it

i would argue that govs should play a lesser role in the daily life of the citizens - pple should be given the chance to succeed or fail as they please.

besides unfortunate circumstances (like being born handicapped or being orphaned when young etc) every citizen in s'pore already has the ability to make a decent life for himself here.

Ok, I mean 3 meals a day, accomodation (not necesarily own property but roof over the head), a means of livelihood if the person is able, basic necessities of life, until a person is dead.
Obviously no holidays, sports cars, expensive watches and plasma tvs.
I understand the points you raised, but these are not the "ultimate purposes" right?
They are all things the government should do to ensure that ultimately, every citizen born on the shores can have and will continue to have a decent life.

i think the gov should do less, see my edit referring to anarchism. as an analogy, gov should just 'build the house' while we decide what to do with the house.

i don't think there is a universal standard for what a gov should do for its people, but rather, any gov's role (ie the social contract) should be defined BY the Electorate/ the people.

so in s'pore, gov's old role was to provide $ for people in exchange for compliance. don't think this social contract will remain for another generation.
